Have you tried Ray-Ban Meta glasses? They’re pretty cool. They’re light, stylish and effective, letting you listen to music, make calls and take photos and video in a pair of great-looking smart glasses. The next model will be much more powerful, it’s claimed.

According to Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Meta is creating its next product. “Meta races to get its critical new smart glasses to market this year,” Gurman claims, saying that new glasses are a major product priority for 2025.

This will mean, “an October launch of high-end, $1,000-plus smart glasses that include a small display. Unlike Meta’s current spectacles, this model will let wearers use simple on-screen apps and review photos that they’ve taken with the device,” Gurman claims.

That’s a big step forward because there’s no screen in the current pair. To be honest, I never miss the display because there’s so much else going on, such as the ability to ask the glasses to describe what you’re looking at or, in the latest feature release, to live-translate conversations for you.

But I see the value of the display, as Gurman says, to check how the photos or video you’ve just shot turned out, so you can go again if you need to.

The display itself is crucial: nobody wants something like Google Glass again and the current smart specs that have tiny screens in the top of the frames risk making you look as though you’re rolling your eyes all the time.

Gurman says there’s a “slight risk” that the new specs will be delayed past October.

But there’s no denying the current model has been very successful, not least because they look and feel so good. The report also notes that “it’s still shocking that Apple has been so slow to offer a competitor to the current Meta glasses, which have been a hit. After all, this is a company that already has one foot in the fashion world (thanks to the Apple Watch),” Gurman points out.

New Ray-Ban Meta glasses are certainly something to look forward to, and a 2025 release is appealing. And since Apple is also believed to be working on smart glasses, the world of AR glasses is about to become more intesting.
