The NYT Mini is a quick and dirty version of the newspaper’s larger and long-running crossword. Most days, there are between three and five clues in each direction on a five by five grid, but the puzzles are sometimes larger, especially on Saturdays.

Unlike its larger sibling, the NYT Mini crossword is free to play on the New York Times website or NYT Games app. However, you’ll need an NYT Games subscription to access previous puzzles in the archives.

The NYT Mini is a fun daily distraction that usually takes no time at all. I try to beat the standard weekday grid in less than a minute. But sometimes I can’t quite figure out one or two clues and need to reveal the answer.

To help you avoid doing that, here are the NYT Mini Crossword answers (spoilers lie ahead, of course):

1) “Pink ___ Club” (Chappell Roan hit) – PONY
5) Instrument that might be made with a comb and wax paper – KAZOO
6) How bedtime stories are often read – ALOUD
7) On edge – NOUSE
8) Short Instagram video – REEL

DOWN

1) Less colorful – PALER
2) Layer of the upper atmosphere – OZONE
3) Totally pointless – NOUSE
4) Hit a high note in a high place, perhaps – YODEL
5) Kit ___ bar – KAT

Kind of a bizarre puzzle today with a word that I’m not sure actually exists, or at least it doesn’t mean this. That would be NOUSE, the answer to the “totally pointless” clue but from what I can tell. Here’s one:

“Nouse” in British slang refers to common sense, intelligence, or understanding. It can be used to describe someone’s ability to approach a situation intelligently or to make a wise decision. It’s essentially a more informal way of saying someone has “smarts” or “savvy.”

So…what? I have no idea what happened here but feel free to explain if you understand.
