Women’s Euro 2025: How every team can qualify for quarterfinals
The group stage at the Women’s Euro 2025 has started in earnest, and we will soon begin to find out the first nations through to the quarterfinals.
Here’s how countries could make it through — or go out — on matchday 2.
Qualified for quarterfinals (4/8): Norway, Spain, Germany, Sweden
Eliminated (4/8): Iceland, Belgium, Denmark, Poland

2. Head-to-head in the game(s) between the teams in question

7. If two teams who are level have played each other in the final group game, a penalty shootout determines places

Wednesday, July 2
Group A: Iceland 0-1 Finland (Thun)
Group A: Switzerland 1-2 Norway (Basel)

Thursday, July 10
Group A: Finland vs. Switzerland (9 p.m., Geneva)
Group A: Norway vs. Iceland (9 p.m., Thun)
Norway have won the group with a game to spare, while Iceland already know they will be headed home.
That leaves second place up for grabs, with Switzerland taking on Finland in Geneva on Thursday.
Switzerland’s 90th-minute second goal vs. Iceland could prove decisive, as it means they are ahead of Finland on goal difference. The Swiss therefore know they will finish in second place with a win or a draw, while Finland have to beat the hosts to reach the quarterfinals.
GROUP B
Thursday, July 3
Group B: Belgium 0-1 Italy (Sion)

Monday, July 7
Group B: Spain 6-2 Belgium (Thun)

Friday, July 11

SPAIN
Have already booked their place in the quarterfinals, and will top the group with a win or draw against Italy.
ITALY
Win: Through to the quarterfinals as group winners.
Draw: Through to the quarterfinals as group runners-up.
Loss: Runners-up if Portugal draw or lose, and are most likely still through even if Portugal win.
PORTUGAL
Must beat Belgium and hope Italy lose. As the two teams drew their match, second place would be decided on goal difference and Portugal’s heavy loss to Spain makes it tough.
Portugal (-5) would need a six goal swing on Italy (+1). So, if Italy were to lose 3-0, Portugal would have to win 3-0 to finish second on goals scored.
In the unlikely scenario where Portugal and Italy finish on the same goal difference (e.g. 3-0, 5-2 for 4:6), positions would be decided on yellow and red cards (Portugal 0, Italy -3) and if the record is still identical, a random draw.
BELGIUM
Eliminated.

Group C: Poland vs. Denmark (9 p.m., Lucerne)
Sweden and Germany have both qualified, and will play each other on Saturday for top spot.
Sweden (+4) have superior goal difference to Germany (+3). That means Sweden will top the group with a win or draw, while Germany need a victory to finish first.
Denmark and Poland will be on the plane home at the weekend.
GROUP D
Saturday, July 5
Group D: Wales 0-3 Netherlands (Lucerne)
Group D: France 2-1 England (Zurich)
Wednesday, July 9
Group D: England vs. Netherlands (6 p.m., Zurich)
Group D: France vs. Wales (9 p.m., St. Gallen)
Sunday, July 13
Group D: Netherlands vs. France (9 p.m., Basel)
Group D: England vs. Wales (9 p.m., St. Gallen)
Another group with two teams on three points who do not play each other on matchday two, which means the permutations are the same once more.
Netherlands will qualify with a victory over England if France win or draw.
France will be through with a victory over Wales if Netherlands win or draw.
England will be eliminated if they lose and France win or draw.
Wales will be out if they are beaten and Netherlands win or draw.
If both Netherlands and France win, the top two places are sealed and first position will be decided when they meet on Sunday. England and Wales would both be out.
