ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1492 Hints And Answer For Sunday, July 20th

Looking for a little help with today’s Wordle? You’ve come to the right place. Whether you’re stuck on your first guess or just need a final nudge, this daily guide offers hints, clues, and the answer to keep your streak alive—just watch out for spoilers!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

July just keeps trucking along. It’s been nice, though. We got some rain this weekend and hopefully we’ll get plenty more over the course of this week. Unlike so much of America, we are far from flooding. It’s very dry and the forest is like a tinderbox waiting to explode. Other than that, it’s quite lovely. School starts back up soon, with less than two weeks of summer break left, though my eldest is now a high school graduate and free from that obligation. My youngest starts 10th grade this coming semester. How did we all get so old?

Enough rambling! We have a Wordle to solve!

How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

  • Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
  • Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
  • Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.

Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Today’s Wordle Hints And Answer

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

CHOIR is usually a word I use for my second guess, but I bumped it to the starting lineup today, which was apparently a mistake. 293 words remained, and just one lonely ‘I’ in yellow. I changed course and used Wordle Bot’s favorite opener, SLATE, for guess #2 which only gave me a yellow ‘T’ but did cut the remaining solutions down to just six. I tried TYING for guess #3 and that left me with just one option: TIZZY for the win! I’m all in a tizzy because I solved this Wordle!

Competitive Wordle Score

The Bot and I each get 0 today for guessing in four and tying one another. Our July totals remain neck-and-neck:

Erik: 8 points

Wordle Bot: 9 points

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “tizzy” is a slang term that likely originated in the 1930s United States, though its exact origin is uncertain. It’s believed to be a playful or altered formation—possibly influenced by words like “fizzy” or “dizzy”—evoking a sense of agitation or nervous excitement. It first appeared in print meaning a flustered or excited state, often described as being “in a tizzy.”
