Not long now until the iPhone 17 series is unveiled — read a full schedule of everything that will happen up to release date here — and along with its other secrets, the price will be revealed.
Regular leaker Instant Digital has claimed, in a post spotted by MacRumors, that the next iPhone 17 Pro will cost $50 more than it does now. This chimes with previous reports that every iPhone will see a $50 price increase compared to current counterparts. Obviously, there’s no precedent for the iPhone 17 Air, as the forthcoming slim phone is nicknamed, so we’ll have to see with that one.
However, the leaker suggested a silver lining: it could come alongside an increase in storage. The leak says, “17 Pro starts at +$50, but I don’t know if it starts with 256GB,” they explain. This would put the price of the phone up $999 to $1,049. But there’s also a way to see this change as a price cut.
“It’s possible that Apple could increase the iPhone 17 Pro’s base storage to 256GB, bringing it in line with the Pro Max, to help justify its $50 price increase. That would represent an effective price cut of $50 over today’s iPhone 16 Pro with 256GB of storage and help to simplify the lineup,” MacRumors says.
There’s no mention of what might happen to other phones in the range, and while I think it’s possible that the storage level could go up for the iPhone 17 Pro, I think it’s wholly unlikely to be the case for the iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Air.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max, for comparison, has 256GB storage in its lowest-priced option.
Pricing is the last detail Apple releases at its keynote events, and is something the company can keep up its sleeves effectively.
