Campfire Audio, the Portland-based maker of premium audio gear, has revealed its latest innovation in earphone design. The new Grand Luna IEMs extend Campfire’s line of planar magnetic IEMs and this all-new model is the company’s first planar-balanced armature hybrid.

Campfire has combined a customized version of the brand’s popular 14mm planar magnetic driver with two precision-tuned balanced armatures. The result, says Campfire, is “a smooth and richly detailed sound that’s deeply immersive.” This sound is down to something called Additive Acoustic Optical Inclusion housing that provides the Grand Luna’s spatial tuning using precision-engineered acoustic chambers.

Hand Finished In Portland

The earphones’ aesthetics match the acoustic innovation, with each earpiece housed in a vibrant, internally dyed red, externally transparent, 3D-printed shell. Each Grand Luna has a stainless-steel lid, individually hand-finished at Campfire’s Portland workshop. The lid is flame-treated and brushed by hand, leaving a colorful and organic CA logo and a textured stainless-steel finish. The process ensures each earphone is unique.

“Grand Luna is the perfect balance of new and intriguing tuning, design, and materials, while having a performance that is incredibly accessible and versatile,” says Ken Ball, Founder and Lead Acoustic Designer at Campfire Audio. “It can be a one-size-fits-all solution for any level of listener or audiophile, while still providing something fresh and explorative.”

The Grand Luna’s 14mm planar driver delivers low and mid frequencies while maintaining a clean presentation. Meanwhile, two custom, high-performance, balanced armatures handle the high frequencies. Grand Luna has an unprecedented high-frequency extension that goes as high as 30kHz, while remaining smooth, non-fatiguing, and eliminating harshness or sibilance thanks to Campfire’s acoustic engineering.

New Modular Cable System

Another first with the Grand Luna is the debut of Campfire’s brand-new modular cable system. Included in the box are three interchangeable terminations: 3.5mm single-ended, 4.4mm balanced and a USB-C DAC module powered by the Cirrus Logic Master HiFi CS43131 chip. This new system means the IEMs can be used with a high-end portable player, balanced amplifier or plugged in directly into a smartphone or computer.

The Grand Luna continues Campfire Audio’s tradition of producing small batches of products that are hand-assembled in Portland, Oregon. By merging the latest in planar technology with Campfire’s sound signature and acoustic engineering, the brand thinks the new IEMs will be popular with its customers.
