Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is a remake of the original 2004 JRPG that debuted on PSP but has since made its way to Steam for wider Western audiences. It’s the first part of a trilogy of ‘in the Sky’ games, and considered the ideal entry point for the wider Trails franchise which features many sub-series, spin-offs, and other games all taking place in the same overarching world.

Trails is a massively popular franchise among JRPG fans and one I’ve personally been eager to dive into once this remake was announced. It’s being published by GungHo Online Entertainment, the same company behind this year’s excellent Lunar Remastered Collection.

How to Play the Trails In The Sky 1st Chapter Demo?

You can find the demo for Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter on the digital storefront of whichever platform you want to play the full game on. That means the demo is available on Switch/Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.

There is no indication of Steam Deck compatibility status, but since it’s launching on consoles day one and has controller support on PC, it’s a safe bet. Early reports from trying the demo seem to be strong indicators it’ll play great on Deck.

How Long is the Trails In The Sky 1st Chapter Demo?

The demo for Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is approximately 5-7 hours long, containing the entire prologue portion. However, it depends on your play style. I’m around 3 hours into the demo for myself and I just reached the point of the prologue where Cassius departs on the airship—if you’re familiar with the original, you know this is still very, very early.

If you strictly focus on just the main storyline, skip most side content, don’t tinker with upgrades much, and skip through a lot of the dialogue and cutscenes, then of course that will be much shorter for you. I’m not one to tell anyone how to play their games, but I’d argue that would be the wrong way to play a JRPG like this for sure!

Does the Trails In The Sky 1st Chapter Demo Progress Carry Over to Release?

Yes, your progress from the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter demo will carry over to the full release of the game next month. So, you can download and play the demo now on your platform of choice and get a big head start into the game without having to worry about replaying all of that content again at launch.

Which Platforms Will the Trails In The Sky 1st Chapter Release On?

Just like the demo, Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is releasing for Switch/Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. Personally, I’ll be playing the game on PS5 and also playing on my PlayStation Portal from time to time.

When Does Trails In The Sky 1st Chapter Release?

The Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter remake releases on September 19th. That’s not much longer to wait, with less than a month to go! Hopefully, if this remake does well and sells well, there will be more remakes coming in the future. Based on my early impressions, I have high hopes.
