The Jack Black and Jason Momoa blockbuster hit A Minecraft Movie begins streaming on Max this week.
Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), A Minecraft Movie is based on the classic video game Minecraft, which was released by Mojang Studios in 2009. The film opened in theaters on April 4 and arrived on digital streaming via premium video on demand on May 13.
After earning $167.2 million in its opening weekend domestically, A Minecraft Movie went on to earn $423.7 million from North American theaters and $527.5 million in international ticket sales for a worldwide box office tally of $951.3 million. The film had a $150 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, according to The Numbers.
In addtion to the film’s big box office take, A Minecraft Movie inspired an in-theater TikTok craze surrounding the film’s “Chicken Jockey” scene. Eventually, some theater chains embraced the enthusiasm of its moviegoers and held special Chicken Jockey screenings.
After teasing in May that A Minecraft Movie was “coming soon” to Max, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced last week that the film will debut on the streaming service on Friday, June 20.
For viewers who don’t subscribe to Max, the streaming service offers an ad-based tier for $9.99 per month or an ad-free tier for $16.99 per month without ads.
Additionally, Max offers an ad-free tier for $20.99 per month that includes 4K Ultra HD programming.
What Is ‘A Minecraft Movie’ About?
Per Warner Bros. Discovery, the summary for A Minecraft Movie reads, “Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival!
“Four misfits — Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) — find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.
“To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative … the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
Rated PG, A Minecraft Movie also stars Jennifer Coolidge and the voices of Rachel House, Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie, Matt Berry and director Jared Hess.
