Apple iPhone 17 Pro Controversial Design Change: New Report Weighs In

In a matter of hours, Apple will send out invites to its next special event, I believe. Then, we’ll know exactly when the iPhone 17 Series will be released (full schedule here). While full details will be saved for the special event another report points to what the iPhone 17 Pro will look like.

In the latest Power On newsletter from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, while discussing the future of the iPhone in the coming years, there are plenty of comments on what’s almost here.
Gurman says that the design isn’t madly different, although there’s one way it is, as you’ll see next. Talking about the 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17: “These will look familiar — basically the iPhone 16 in slightly different clothes. The Pro models will have a revamped camera system and updated industrial design on the back of the phone,” he said. That industrial design is a definite change: the camera panel will go from a square in one corner to something that stretches across the width of the phone.
One controversial suggestion has been about the colors of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The Pro models of iPhone traditionally have more muted colors than the regular iPhone — even the current Desert Titanium option which was rumored to be gaudy has turned out to be a discreet, quiet shade.
So a recent rumor of an orange iPhone 17 Pro raised eyebrows. It sounded so loud that many disbelieved it.
However, Mark Gurman says it’s true. “The Pro models also will be available in an orange color,” he reports.
“But don’t expect eye-catching changes,” he adds. I’d suggest that orange could easily be eye-catching.
But I take his point: while the predicted slim phone, possibly called iPhone 17 Air, is something very different, the Pro will in some ways be a direct evolution.
“The Pro models have been strong performers for Apple, and I don’t expect that to change this year — even with the modest update and price hikes due to tariffs. Some people will opt for the slimmer model instead, but the Pro versions are probably more practical for most consumers,” Gurman says.
