The British and Irish Lions fell short of an historic series whitewash over the Wallabies as they suffered a 22-12 defeat in the third-and-final Test on Saturday.

The Lions concluded their tour of Australia with a messy, fiery and weather-affected game that was suspended minutes into the second-half due to lightning strikes.

Andy Farrell’s side had been hoping to become the first Lions team in over 50 years to go an entire tour unbeaten, but they came unstuck in the tricky, wet conditions in Sydney.

Australia took an early lead through a Dylan Pietsch try and the boot of Tom Lynagh, and things went from bad to worse for the Lions when captain Maro Itoje and wing Tommy Freeman left the game due to head injuries.

The teams returned to the field after the lightning delay with the vast majority of the second-half still to play, and Australia added to their lead soon when Max Jorgensen broke through for an easy try.

The Lions had a glimpse of a comeback when Jac Morgan went over, but a score from Australia’s Tate McDermott ended the tourists’ hopes of a series whitewash.

Replacement Will Stuart made the score look better when he scored a try as the clocked ticked over to 80 minutes.
