Batman’s Kevin Conroy Voiced One Final New Role For Netflix

ANAHEIM, CA – MARCH 29: Kevin Conroy talks onstage to promote Warner Bros. Animation’s ‘Justice … [+]
Kevin Conroy, most famously the eternal voice of Batman in animated and video game projects for decades, sadly passed away in 2022 from cancer. But due to the nature of voicework, we’ve kept hearing him in a few projects posthumously, and now we’ve found another one. One that at this point, has to be his final role. And it’s not Batman.
It’s been revealed that Kevin Conroy will play VP Baines, a character in the Netflix-produced Devil May Cry anime series that will arrive on April 3. Here’s the trailer, which racked up a million views in a day.
If you were fearing the worst, given that this is 2025, no, Conroy’s voice is not being made or enhanced with AI, says Producer Adi Shankar:
“[The role]
was recorded before he passed. No AI used. Mr. Conroy gave it amazingly nuanced performance. It was both a pleasure and an honor to work with him.”
Conroy’s last role as Batman was in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 3 back in 2024, and that project and this one shows just how far in advance voicework like this may be recorded. There was some speculation whether Conroy’s true final Batman part would be in a live service seasonal portion of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, where he voiced an alternate, evil version of Batman. Later, it was revealed that Batman was a clone, and the character did return, but in an unvoiced cutscene. Conroy played Batman in three previous Arkham games (not Origins). A new one is in the works, apparently, but will sadly will have to press on without him. Conroy’s opposite, Mark Hamill, has said he doesn’t want to keep playing the Joker without Conroy.
As for the Devil May Cry anime, we will learn the extent of his role in two weeks or so. Netflix has a surprisingly stunning track record with animated video game adaptations from Castlevania to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to Arcane, so the odds may be in its favor that it will turn out to be good. And no doubt however it ends up, that Kevin Conroy will be good in it. As ever, it’s a shame we lost him, and only at age 66.
