After the initial tease from Bandai Spirits about a Chogokin Metal Gear REX toy, we now have more details on it, including a February release date.

Like previous and recent Chogokin releases, the first bit of good news is that this Metal Gear REX toy will come with LED lights (with three LR44 batteries included).

Following that, the second piece of good news is that this Metal Gear REX toy will contain a great deal of diecast in its joints, for strength and stability (shown below).

Having seen this Metal Gear REX toy up close in Shibuya’s Parco department store, I can also confirm that it’s about the same size as the old Kotobukiya kit.

This was and is still a large model kit, but smaller than the threeA version that had issues with its joints breaking under the weight of all that plastic.

As this is a smaller toy and one with judicious amounts of diecast in the joints, this should make for a very good rendition of this classic mecha from Metal Gear Solid.

The only downside to all this excellence is that the price tag comes in at 36,300 yen (or around $246 at the current exchange rate), which is somewhat steep.

While smaller than the threeA release, this is still a big and chunky Chogokin release, and Bandai Spirits has done a lot of work to make sure that it is true to the game, hence the price point.

It’s extremely likely that Bandai Spirits will also release this in the West, but if you really cannot wait, then places like HobbyLink Japan are already listing it for pre-order.
