Major League Baseball removed Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz from the team, officials said Thursday, amid an unspecified probe of the right-handed starter.

He will be inactive through at least July 17, according to an MLB statement.

“Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through the end of the All-Star break due to an MLB investigation,” the league said in a statement. “We will not comment further until the investigation has been completed.”

The American League club also confirmed Ortiz’s status.

“The Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that Luis Ortiz has been placed on leave per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation,” the Guardians said in statement.

“The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time, and will respect the league’s confidential investigative process.”

The 26-year-old born in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic is 4-9 so far this season with a 4.36 ERA.

He’s struggled with control in 2025, walking 4.3 batters per 9 innings, above his career average of 3.9 free passes.
