Clevetura’s CLVX S Keyboard For Macs Has A Trackpad Embedded Under The Keys

Back in the days of desktop computers we relied on a keyboard and mouse to navigate our way around the screen. Those were the days when laptops were largely unaffordable but these days most people are used to using a laptop as their main computer.

The problem with laptops is their cramped keyboards and tiny trackpads which can be a pain to type on and be a bit of an ergonomic nightmare. For example, you must take your fingers off the keyboard to use the trackpad just to move the cursor around the screen or make gestures like pinching and swiping. It slows the workflow down

Clevetura is a company that spotted a gap in the market and made a keyboard that has a trackpad embedded in it. It’s a better solution than typing on a laptop and using a trackpad because you don’t need to take your fingers off the keyboard to use the trackpad.

Embedded Trackpad

Clevetura’s keyboard technology works but using a trackpad sensor embedded beneath a keyboard, enabling users to seamlessly switch from typing to tracking and gestures without having to lift their hands off the keys. It seems so obvious when you think about the concept.

Based in Limassol, Cyprus, Clevetura has developed TouchOnKeys technology that combines a trackpad with a keyboard. The company is headed by Mike Krupenkov and currently has offices in the U.S. and China. It has been perfecting its unique TouchOnKeys technology since 2017 and is constantly evolving and enhancing the concept.

Originally developed for Windows and Linux computers, Clevetura made a full-size keyboard for Mac users in the form of the CLVX 1 last year. Now the company has launched its Clevetura CLVX S, a compact 78-key model for people on the move who want to free themselves from cramped laptop keyboards and trackpads.

Native Gestures

As well as functioning as a trackpad, Clevetura’s software can recognize the native trackpad gestures used in macOS. This enables seamless switching between typing and gesturing or moving the pointer around the screen. Thanks to the embedded trackpad, the CLVX S keyboard makes coding, designing and editing on a Mac faster and more efficient than when using a laptop’s trackpad and keyboard.

The CLVX S has a compact ANSI layout for macOS with 78 keys that have laptop-style scissor switches beneath them. It has a full row of function/media keys which are all backlit with RGB LEDs. As well as connecting via USB-C, the CLVX S is able to pair with up to three separate Bluetooth devices and can switch seamlessly between them, enabling users to control a couple of laptops and a tablet from a single keyboard.

The trackpad zone on the CLVX S is only slightly smaller than the keyboard itself and demarcated by a thin line. The larger is area than the trackpads on most laptops and can be easily turned on or off. For example, you might prefer to use a mouse or a graphics pen for some tasks and trackpad for others. The beauty of the embedded trackpad is that it also recognizes the native macOS gestures that a MacBook can use such as pinch, zoom and swipe.

Flat Key Surface

The build of the CLVX S is high-quality and all the keys are completely flat without the slight scoop or dish shape found on most keys. It can take a bit of getting used to, but it’s worth it for the convenience of having a trackpad under your fingertips. At first, there can be a tendency for fingers to slither and slip a little when typing, but after a few minutes of adjustment, it all becomes second nature.

The keys on the CLVX S are backlit with RGB LEDs and each key has a shine-through legends, making the keyboard suitable for use in low-light settings such as an edit suite. The top row of can be used as classic Function keys or in media mode giving access to controls for playing music, adjusting backlights and switching connectivity options. The row of keys also has two touch-slide areas that can be used to adjust backlighting and volume levels.

The Clevetura TouchOnKeys software is the real intelligence behind the CLVX S and can be used to set-up custom profiles, finger gestures, touch sliders and even train adaptive AI so that it adapts and learns from the user’s typing style. The keyboard also has large left and right mouse buttons positioned just below the space bar that can be used to click on buttons or access contextual menus in macOS.
