Early goals from James McAtee and Harvey Elliott propelled Lee Carsley’s England side to a 3-1 win over their young counterparts from Spain to reach the semifinals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship on Saturday.

England will now take on the Netherlands on Wednesday in Bratislava for a place in the final and a chance to defend the trophy they won two years ago.

Manchester City’s McAtee and Liverpool midfielder Elliott both found the net in the opening 15 minutes as England made a dream start in Trnava, Slovakia.

A Spanish comeback looked potentially on the cards when Javi Guerra pulled one back from the penalty spot shortly before halftime.

But England held their opponents at bay and made sure of their place in the last four when Elliot Anderson converted a penalty of his own in stoppage time.

There was an unsavoury end to the game as the teams clashed following the final whistle and Spain substitute Rafa Marín was shown a red card.
