Google Issues Warning For Fitbit Users

Google has sent out a warning email to Fitbit users, which will result in the loss of their account data if they do not take action.

This is all part of Google’s major transition for Fitbit accounts, bringing them under Google’s account system rather than operating independently.

Anything not migrated by February 2, 2026, will be lost according to Google’s latest statement on the matter.

“If you want to keep using Fitbit, you must move to a Google Account by 2 February 2026. If you use a Gmail account to sign in to Fitbit, you must also move to a Google Account,” says Google.

This shift in policy was announced back in 2023, but the change has happened slowly presumably thanks to the sheer number of Fitbit users accrued over the years. They all need to be given enough warning about the possible loss of their data.

“Your historical data will not be retained beyond 2 February 2026 (except as needed to comply with laws), and your account and data will be deleted,” Google warns in the email sent out to Fitbit account holders.

Previously, Google had stated Fitbit users would have until at least 2025 to make the shift — it has taken until now to get this firm deadline.

How To Save Your Fitbit Account Data

If you don’t want to continue holding an account but also don’t want to lose your historical data, there is one other solution. You can export that data within the Fitbit platform. Google has a webpage with all the necessary instructions.

Fitbit was acquired by Google in January 2021. Since then there has been a gradual shift in Fitbit strategy, and an assimilation of Fitbit into Google, including its website.

What there hasn’t been since 2021 is a whole mass of new Fitbit devices. The Versa 4 and Sense 2 from 2022 were Fitbit’s last higher-end wearables, likely because these more smartwatch-like lines are perceived as competition for Google’s Pixel Watch line.

The most interesting activity in Fitbit’s line-up is now found in the Ace range. The Fitbit Ace LTE introduced interesting elements like games, access to which is unlocked through activity.

In recent news Fitbit is in the process of giving its app a makeover, potentially to bring it in closer harmony with Google’s house style.
