ForbesToday’s NYT ‘Connections’ Hints And Answers For Sunday, September 14th

Hey there, Connectors! I hope you had a tremendous weekend. I’m very happy to be back with you for another Monday-Friday run of this column.

As you may know by now (and if not, welcome!), I like to kick off the Monday editions of this here column with a fun, upbeat song. My goal with this is to get you moving your body and maybe put a smile on your face at the start of the week.

This time around, we’re going all the way back to 2006. It’s a song that’s probably better suited to a Friday or Saturday night than a Monday, but hey, I’m going with it. Even better, it’s a track from a Canadian icon (and Timbaland).

“Promiscuous” is a mile away from Nelly Furtado’s earlier big hit “I’m Like A Bird,” which is also great. I used to dance to it in clubs all the time back in the day. It’s got such a great beat:

Anyway, before we start, I want to mention the great community we have on Discord, where we chat about Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re welcome to hang out with us.

Discord is also the best way to give me feedback about the column. I don’t look at the comments or Twitter much. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my newsletter, Pastimes.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Monday, September 15 are coming right up.

NYT Connections Hints

Scroll slowly! I’ll first give you a list of today’s words, then a hint for each category. After that, I’ll reveal one word that goes into each group. Then I’ll tell you the category names, followed by the full answers.

Today’s 16 words are…

  • CONNECTION
  • BANSHEE
  • CARPET
  • STRAND
  • PIP
  • CHEMISTRY
  • BANK
  • TILE
  • HEARTBREAKER
  • WOOD
  • SPARK
  • COAST
  • LAMINATE
  • SHORE
  • WAILER
  • FIREWORKS

And the hints for today’s Connections groups are:

  • 🟨 Yellow group — like vinyl and cork
  • 🟩 Green group — where she might sell seashells or you may find dunes
  • 🟦 Blue group — you either have it with someone or you don’t, and having it with too many people could spell trouble
  • 🟪 Purple group — you couldn’t really ask for better backup

NYT Connections – One Answer Per Group

Need some extra help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Let’s take a look at one answer for each group.

Here we go…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — TILE
  • 🟩 Green group — SHORE
  • 🟦 Blue group — CHEMISTRY
  • 🟪 Purple group — HEARTBREAKER

NYT Connections Groups

Today’s Connections groups are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — flooring options
  • 🟩 Green group — beachy area
  • 🟦 Blue group — romantic vibe
  • 🟪 Purple group — member of a classic backing band

NYT Connections Answers

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your last chance to look away.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are…

  • 🟨 Yellow group — flooring options (CARPET, LAMINATE, TILE, WOOD)
  • 🟩 Green group — beachy area (BANK, COAST, SHORE, STRAND)
  • 🟦 Blue group — romantic vibe (CHEMISTRY, CONNECTION, FIREWORKS, SPARK)
  • 🟪 Purple group — member of a classic backing band (BANSHEE, HEARTBREAKER, PIP, WAILER)

There was certainly a bit of navel-gazing going on with today’s grid. I just wasn’t sure whether the NYT games minus an “s” – CONNECTION, STRAND, PIP and TILE – would be a group or a red herring. I took the plunge and… of course it was a red herring.

I then realized that CONNECTION went with SPARK, CHEMISTRY and FIREWORKS for the blues. From there, the greens were clear enough. I figured out the yellows too, but I had to slide through the purples first.

When HEARTBRAKER popped up, I thought it might be a reference to the Mariah Carey song. But nope, it relates to Tom Petty and the HEARTBREAKERs. The other purples reference Siouxsie and the BANSHEEs, Gladys Knight and the PIPs and Bob Marley and the WAILERs. Fun gimmick for today’s game!

No perfect game this time but that’s win 199 in a row. No pressure for tomorrow. Gulp. Here’s my grid for today:

🟦🟩🟪🟨
🟦🟦🟦🟦
🟩🟩🟩🟩
🟪🟪🟪🟪
🟨🟨🟨🟨

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Tuesday’s game if you need them.

P.S. Let’s close things out for today with one of the best songs from Tom Petty and the HEARTBREAKERs. “American Girl” was ranked number 169 on Rolling Stone’s 2021 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and it absolutely deserves a spot on the ranking:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!
