Hints, Spangram And Answers For Monday, September 22nd — ‘Find An Opening’

Farewell summer! Hello fall! We’ve reached the bridge between seasons and I have mixed feelings. I love autumn. I love the cooler days, the changing leaves. But there’s a wistfulness to it all, a sadness that creeps in. Spring is hopeful. Winter is over and summer is coming. A new dawn. As much as I love autumn, it is a season of melancholy. Cozy melancholy, to be sure, but still.

We have a Strands to solve, regardless of the season, so let’s uncover some words!

How To Play Strands

Strands is the newest game in the New York Times’ stable of puzzle games. It’s a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we’re given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of these words is the spangram which crosses from one side of the grid to another and reveals even more about the day’s theme.

Spoilers ahead.

Today’s Strands Breakdown

I actually struggled with this one quite a bit. Not at first, though. I found ALCOVE instantly and pretty soon had CREVICE and NOOK. It too me longer to find CRANNY and NICHE, however, and longer still to get PIGEONHOLE. For that one, I just started typing out the letters in the bottom right corner and as I did I figured it out. I find this can help. Just actively rearranging the letters via writing or typing somehow gets you there in a way just looking at the grid can’t sometimes. This left me with just the spangram, which I got quickly enough.
