Harry Tector hit a half-century as Ireland pushed Bangladesh into the fifth day of their second Test in Mirpur.

A Bangladesh victory still seems the likely outcome with the hosts requiring just four wickets and Ireland needing 333 more runs to spring a surprise.

The fourth day passed off without incident after Friday’s third day of action was temporarily stopped because of a 5.7 magnitude earthquake in the capital city Dhaka.

Bangladesh built on their strong start to the series and had a lead of 508 runs by the time captain Najmul Hossain Shanto declared their innings closed on 297-4.

Ireland suffered an early blow in their batting as openers Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling were out by the eighth over for just 13 and nine runs.

Heinrich Mallan’s side recovered as Curtis Campher and Tector steadied the innings, with the latter registering his fifth Test half-century.

Campher stayed the course and was 34 not out with Andy McBrine on 11 alongside him to cut the gap.

The match resumes on Sunday at 03:30 GMT.

Bangladesh won the first Test of the two-match series by an innings and 47 runs.

The second Test will be followed by three T20 internationals.
