You may be hunting for horror stories and spooky shows right now, given our proximity to Halloween, but there are other Netflix shows to watch that are likely going to be better than those. And ones involving murder, at least. Now, one has returned to Netflix for a new season, one landing its third 100% Rotten Tomatoes score in a row: Dark Winds.
Crime drama Dark Winds is originally an AMC production, but part of that network’s ongoing deal with Netflix that sends a bunch of its series over to the large streamer in time. We’ve seen this happen with The Walking Dead and Interview with the Vampire. Sometimes it doesn’t go so well, like the very bad Parish currently in Netflix’s top 10 list, but by actual numbers, Dark Winds is the best AMC series, and season 3 has just arrived with another perfect score. Here’s the synopsis of the series if you’re not familiar with it:
“Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.”
The show is a starring vehicle for the excellent Zahn McClarnon, who we have seen in everything from Reservation Dogs to a role in the MCU. One of my favorite recent roles of his is him voicing Orlox in Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne series, the highlight of that show. But he’s had a career that goes all the way back to 1992. He was in Baywatch!
The show is excellent. I’ve only seen the first two seasons, but I will be heading to check out the third imminently. It’s a rare Native-centric production when we haven’t seen enough shows from that community. The ones we have seen? Fantastic, where I’m most recently thinking of the now-ended Reservation Dogs.
The show is not difficult to catch up with. The first two seasons are only six episodes each. Season 3 got upped to 8. Season 4 of Dark Winds is not only greenlit, it actually premieres in four months on February 15, albeit that is on AMC, not Netflix. It took eight months for season 3 to go from AMC to Netflix, if that gives you some sort of timeline for when it will arrive. Looking forward to it, and you can go watch three full seasons now.
