If you’ve ever used an Apple AirTag, you’ll know how useful these little gadgets can be. I don’t think I would travel now without putting an AirTag in my suitcase; I also keep one in my work bag and on my car keys. I am getting to that age where I forget where I put almost everything and being able to find things again using my phone saves time.

I’ve even heard of people sewing an Apple AirTag into their child’s favorite teddy bear. Anyone who has ever suffered from Ursine Bereavement Syndrome will know how traumatic that can be.

However, if you’re looking for a compatible alternative to Apple’s AirTags, you can now choose from lots of other brands. One of those products is the new Ugreen FineTrack Smart Finder which works seamlessly with Apple’s Find My software and can coexist with AirTags.

Ugreen’s new Fine Track Smart Finder is a small and square device powered by a standard CR2032 lithium button cell which can last for up to two years before the battery needs replacing. FineTrack is Apple Certified and works with the Find My smartphone app.

As with Apple AirTags, the Ugreen FineTrack Smart Finder is easy to add to Apple’s Find My app and it can do clever things like tell you when the battery needs replacing and even give you a timely warning if you’ve left your tagged belongings behind, just like an AirTag.

Find Keys And Wallets

Setting up a new tag is easy. Just turn the tag on by pressing its power button and then launch the Find My app on your smartphone. Click on Add Item (not add AirTag) and the system will start searching. Within seconds your FineTrack tag will be identified and you can give it a name like “Mark’s Keys” and choose a suitable emoji for quick identification.

Ugreen includes a set of stickers with each FineTrack Smart Finder so you can differentiate between different physical tags. It also ships with a small lanyard for looping through the corner of the tag. You can also use that corner of the tag for attaching the tag to a keyring. Alternatively, stick it in a bag or suitcase and your belongings can be tracked worldwide.

Like other Find My compatible tags, the Ugreen FineTrack Smart Finder achieves its range and accuracy by using a dual-mode system. Firstly, Global Tracking contacts nearby Apple devices like iPhones, iPads or Macs that can connect with Apple’s Find My network. This means there are billions of devices around the world that make up an “offline finding” mesh.

Even if the lost item has no internet connection, nearby Apple devices can anonymously relay the item’s Bluetooth location to the cloud, enabling you to track it globally using the Apple Find My app. The system also uses Proximity Detection which harnesses the power of Bluetooth at a range of up to 20 meters from the device. You can use Bluetooth to trigger an alarm built into the tag which can help you find those lost keys.

Ugreen stresses that its FineTrack Smart Finder offers some advantages over other brands of tag, including Apple’s AirTags. Firstly, FineTrack Smart Finder has a loud alarm with up to 80dB of sound, making it easier to hear in a noisy environment. Apple AirTags typically manage between 60 and 70dB while many budget trackers can be even quieter.

The FineTrack Smart Finder has a battery life rated at up to two years on a single CR2032 cell. In contrast, Apple’s AirTag batteries usually last about a year and some generic tags may need a new battery within 6 to 12 months. Both the Ugreen FineTrack Smart Finder and Apple’s AirTags use a replaceable CR2032 battery. Some cheaper tags don’t have a replaceable battery although some have rechargeable cells.

Like Apple’s AirTags, the Ugreen tag also supports “left behind” notifications, which alert the user if an item is left behind. Many cheaper trackers don’t support this option. The Ugreen FineTrack works seamlessly with Apple’s Find My network but some other third-party trackers (like Tile) don’t support the ecosystem and use their own app and technology instead.

As well as the FineTrack Smart Finder, Ugreen also produces the FineTracker Slim, a wallet finder tracker that’s the size of a credit card which also works with Apple’s Find My system. The card-size tracker can be slipped into a wallet and has a rechargeable battery. There are other makes of card-style trackers on the market, but some of them have long-lasting single-use battery which means you will need to buy a new tracker when the battery charge runs out.

Pricing and Availability:

The new Ugreen FineTrack Smart Finder Tag is on sale now and costs $19.99 / £14.99 / €14.99. The Ugreen Fine Track Slim wallet finder with rechargeable battery costs $23.99 / £19.99 / €23.99. Both devices can be bought from online retailers like Amazon.
