The weekend is almost upon us and come Sunday—Father’s Day—we’ll be right in the middle of June already. My how time flies, whether or not you’re having fun. The world is a bit crazy right now.

War between Ukraine and Russia. Israel hitting targets across Iran, including Tehran. The National Guard and US Marines deployed into Los Angeles during immigration riots. AI possibly undoing multiple industries all at the same time, including mine. The times are . . . interesting, to say the least. Just not in a good way.

Oh, and it’s Friday the 13th. What could go wrong?

At least we have our shows and movies to distract us. A little escapism goes a long ways. As always, I’ve scoured the internet for all the best new content out there this week and put together this friendly neighborhood streaming guide. First, we’ll take a look what’s brand new, then at what series are airing each week. Let’s dive right in!

If you have any tips or I missed something, shoot me a message on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. You can check out last weekend’s streaming guide right here.

ForbesWhat To Watch This Weekend: New Shows And Movies To Stream On Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV And More

What’s New & Notable This Weekend

Echo Valley (Apple TV+)

This one is interesting because it’s from the creator of HBO’s Mare Of Easttown, which starred Kate Winslet. The new Apple TV+ film follows Julianne Moore’s character—named Kate, oddly enough—whose daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney) shows up with a body in her car and drugs in her system. The thriller has divided critics right down the middle, with a 50% Rotten Tomatoes score. Unfortunately, that’s not even close to the critical acclaim Mare Of Easttown received.

Deep Cover (Prime Video)

This might be one of, if not the, best-reviewed Prime Video Original movies out there, with a 92% critic score and an 83% audience score. Deep Cover stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Mohammed and Orlando Bloom as a trio of improv actors recruited to infiltrate a dangerous crime syndicate in London. I’m getting strong Michael Scarn vibes from this concept, but then everything ties back to The Office in some way or another.

FUBAR — Season 2 (Netflix)

I think I just watched one, or maybe even just part of one episode of Netflix’s FUBAR when the first season came out a couple years ago. It just didn’t capture me. But if you’re an Arnold Schwarzenegger fan and you like action-comedies, this might be for you. It’s also a fitting Father’s Day show since it’s about a father-daughter spy team, with Monica Barbaro playing Luke’s daughter Emma. Matrix star Carrie-Anne Moss is also joining the cast in Season 2, which is cool. Though I’m also reminded of her brief—dare I say “totally wasted”—role in Disney’s awful Star Wars series The Acolyte.

Twin Peaks / Twin Peaks: The Return (Mubi)

The classic surrealist mystery-horror series from Mark Frost and David Lynch debuts on Mubi this week, so if you’ve been itching to watch it again (or for the first time) now you can! Mubi is kind of a cool streaming service also, with a more curated approach to content, which is mostly films though obviously this bucks that trend.

Jaws (Peacock)

Actually, not only is Jaws coming to Peacock this weekend, but also Jaws 2, Jaws III and Jaws: The Revenge. Frankly, I’m not sure the sequels are even worth mentioning, let alone watching, but the original is a classic, and in many ways the precursor to later films like Jurassic Park. Fun fact: If you subtract the Rotten Tomatoes score of Jaws: The Revenge from the Rotten Tomatoes score of Jaws you get 95%.

How To Train Your Dragon (In Theaters)

I’m still working on my review of How To Train Your Dragon, the live-action remake of the Dreamworks (relatively modern) classic animated film, but I can wholeheartedly recommend it. This is how live-action remakes ought to be, and frankly Disney should take note. Just don’t stick around for the post-credits scene. I was also going to include a Father’s Day movie recommendation in this list, but it occurred to me that this is actually the perfect film for Father’s Day, as protagonist Hiccup and his dad, Stoick the Vast, have a whole lot of family stuff to work out.

What’s Streaming Weekly

There haven’t been too many big finales recently, though lots of shows came to an end a couple weeks ago. Apple TV+’s The Studio and Your Friends & Neighbors ended recently. The Last Of Us Season 2 ended—and saw a massive downturn in ratings. Andor’s second season drew to a close, topping the Nielsen streaming charts the week of its finale. Other shows have cropped up to take their place.

Resident Alien — Season 4 (SyFy)

This came out last week on cable TV, but only drops on Peacock this weekend. That’s an annoying gap for those of us who cut our cables many years ago. Alan Tudyk is brilliant in this alien dramedy, though I have yet to dive into Season 4. It’s a very goofy, very heartfelt series and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Stick (Apple TV+)

Owen Wilson stars as washed out golfer who gets a shot at redemption in this feel-good dramedy. It’s not getting the kind of reviews a lot of similar shows on Apple TV+ generally get, so don’t expect another Ted Lasso or Shrinking, but Wilson is a charming lead and if you’re looking for something a bit lighter this weekend, give it a shot.

BMF — Season 4 (Starz)

I hadn’t even heard about BMF until its fourth season came out, probably because BMF is a terrible name for a TV show. It stands for Black Mafia Family (and Black Mafia would have been a way better title for the series) and is based on true stories about the rise of a powerful gang back in 80s Detroit. I ended up watching the first couple episodes of Season 1 and it’s pretty good. People say it’s a “black Sopranos” but it’s really not on the same level as that masterpiece. Still, I’m interested in seeing where it goes.

Death Valley (BritBox)

I’ve been binging the first season of The Shield on Hulu since I somehow never watched it when it was coming out (oh yeah, I was broke and didn’t have cable TV!) and really enjoying it, which has also stopped me from diving into this comedic mystery starring the great character actor Timothy Spall. It’s on my list, however, as I like nothing more than cozy British mysteries.

Duster (HBO)

I wrote not long ago that HBO’s new 1970s Arizona crime series Duster has an identity crisis. I stand by that assessment while adding this caveat: It’s currently one of my guilty pleasures. It’s far from perfect, but Josh Holloway is a charming lead and I just love the time period and the fact that this takes place in my home state, and that in almost every episode my hometown of Flagstaff has been name-dropped. It’s a lot of fun.

Murderbot (Apple TV+)

Alexander Skarsgard is terrific as the titular Murderbot in Apple TV+’s latest comedy sci-fi series, Murderbot, based on the books by Martha Wells. The rest of the show is a little more hit-or-miss, ranging from genuinely funny to somewhat cringe. I had a lot of fun in the end, but it takes awhile to get to the good stuff, and Apple’s weekly release format doesn’t work well here, especially since every episode is so short. Read my review here.

The Walking Dead: Dead City — Season 2 (AMC+)

I finally caught up on The Walking Dead: Dead City and now there’s a new episode coming out. I assumed it would only be six episodes this season, but it’s eight, and I’m honestly not sure how I’m going to suffer through the next two. It’s quite terrible and bland with some genuinely goofy moments that weren’t meant to be played for laughs. This whole franchise needs to take a break, get new people in leadership and writing, and start over a few years down the road.
