CPR (cardio Pulmonary Resucitation)

By - - [ Health ]

CPR (cardio pulminary resucitation) is an emergency procedure done to blood circulation and ventilation to vital organs. This is done when someone looses consciousness suddenly because of sundden stop in breathing or lack of oxygen. I would go through a few things that could cause sudden stop in breathing.

1. There could be blockage of airway (anoxia), There could be carbonmonoxide poisoning, there could be pulnonary embolus or blockage of pulmonary circulation by emboli (emboli is just a blockage in pulmonary vesseles maybe by clotting of blood in the pulmonary vessles). These are the pulmonary causes.

2. Blockage of blood flow to the heart (myocardial infarction), hypotension(low blood pressure), hypothermia(low body temprature), cardiac failure(inability of the heart to pump blood well). These are the cardiac causes.

3. Drowning, stroke, drug overdose, heart attack, suffocation, accident or injury. These are the respiratory causes.

General Instruction on CPR:

NB: call for help first..

1.The patient must be placed on a hard and flat surface to maintain position and airway, not on a bed.

2.The patients clothing covering the chest must be taken off. Check for response by saying things like, can you hear me? squeeze my hand! what is your name? check for breathing, listen for air

3.Tilt the head and neck or hyper extend the head and neck to increase airway passage.

4.Check for food substance, or vomit remains and remove them to avoid obstruction during artificial breathing.

5.Initiate cardiac compressions immediately and rescue breathing, Mouth to mouth . Compression to ventilation ratio should be 30:2 for adults, 15:2 for children, 3:1 for infants, for every 30 compressions, two rescue breaths is given..Two hands with elbows locked should be used for infants, one hand for children, two fingers(index and middle fingers) for infants..compression rate should be about 100 compressions per minute. Note that children here refer to those from 1-8 years, infants is 0-1 years..

After a successful CPR, the patients resumes normal brathing, normal pulse is resumed (pulse can be checked for on the neck and under the jaw), the patients eye reacts to light.

CPR is effective if performed within 7 minutes of stoppage of blood flow. If blood flow ceases for about one or two hours, the patient could die because of rapid body cell death and brainstem death.

Save a life today.

I think the commonest reason for administering CPR is for victims with cardiac arrest. I also learnt that only about 40% of  cardiac arrest victims survives after CPR is being administered. There are also various important CPR techniques; High-Frequency Chest Compressions, Interposed Abdominal Compression CPR and Open-Chest CPR.

Thanks for the information. As a fact CPR is meant to be taught right from secondary school as they do abroad. At least 10% of deaths that occur can be avoided by the application of CPR!. It is very important to know because we never can know when we need to save a life urgently.

I have actually tried a mouth to mouth resuscitation on one of my course mate back then in school. She had multiple restrictions to breath due to her asthmatic state, when it was getting out of hand and while we kept waiting for the school medical team to start attending to her, I had to do what I could then to save her and it worked.... She would scream then; "I need air, while fighting to breath", finally she was referred to a bigger hospital, about 30mins away from school community, I kept her stable, till we got to the hospital.

Cardiac arrest actually took my grandpa. During his lifetime he like to flex alot. He has his own personal fridge where he stores his own fried meat and all. Even beer and tin milk. He really enjoyed life. May his soul rest in peace
