Factors Responsible For Unemployment

Of all the problems facing this country, the most serious one which needs urgent attention is unemployment. The popular saying is 'Ddevil finds a job 4 an idle hand'. Dis popular saying holds the fact for all times and  also in all places. The consequences of unemployment are manifestly visible everywhere in society. Most of the cases of robbery with or without violence are attributable to unemployment. Prostitution, human trafficking, drug trafficking and many other social vices are traceable to unemployment. For when a person is not gainfully employed, there is nothing he cannot do 'to keep body and soul together'.

So what are the factors responsible for this monster that is terrorising the whole country?

First and foremost there has been the proliferation of tertiary educational institutions in the last two decades. Apart from those established by the Federal Government, each state government has founded its own tertiary institutions. In addition, each religious body has founded or is about to found a university of its own. These tertiary educational institutions turn out graduates in large numbers year-in year-out. Unfortunately no provision is made to employ these graduates.

Apart from this, many of the existing industries and factories are folding up as a result of the harsh economic climate. Thus words such as: retrenchment, rationalisation, trimming of work force, etc, have entered into the industrial language of the country. This, in plain language, means thousands and thousands of workers have been sacked and more are still going into the unemployment market.

Unfortunately, the epileptic nature of electricity is not helping matters. Thousands of people who depend on electricity for their means of livelihood do not have access to it. Power supply has been very erratic. Many technicians and artisans have therefore been sent to the unemployment market. Thus there are the armies and armies of the unemployed.

But then, my fellow Nipers , what can we do to get out of the problem?

  • I think that what we need in this country now is not more schools but more factories and industries. Some of these organizations should stop building schools and focus on building industries and businesses that can accommodate the growing number of graduates. Graduates should also contribute by being entrepreneursand not just job seekers.

  • First of all, not only the government can help youths out with employment. People can also set up their own business and employ graduates. Also I think every one should find what he or she is good out. It's not until we go to school before we make it in life. At least that way unemployment rate will reduce

  • As it is being said "Prayer is the key", just like a key to a door you cannot just put a key in the keyhole and expect the door to just open without applying force to turn it... As to we Nigerians, some that prays for the country and some that don't, we can't just pray and go about our normal lives without trying to make a change, most times we do hear some Americans say"God bless America" positive saying which I will say is working for them, so therefore, we also need to act and get active, creating positivity amongst us. Same goes to the government which are not helping matters, they need to rise and show support likewise we the citizens reciprocating that support when necessary.

  • If we want to solve the problem of unemployment in our country then we should not only make room for raising graduates who will roam about the streets in search of jobs. We need to go back to the drawing board, we can't keep producing graduates of little or no contribution to the growth of the country. The government should strive to make provisions to eradicate unemployment in country by investing in different money yielding sectors and creat job opportunities through them.

  • In addition to the factors mentioned already, let me say that a major factor of unemployment is that most of the job seekers are unemployable. Unemployable in the sense that we seem to have people who are incompetent everywhere. A graduate of English language for instance can not efficiently teach English in a secondary school. Instead he wants to be enjoyed in an industry. And when he is seen unfit and consequently not employed he takes it as a problem.

Because the system of education has made students look for dubious ways to pass exams and come out with good results

I think the only way out is for the government to empower all corpers before leaving the camp. All copper should submite their business plan during registration and all he need should be provided to him. That should serve as his ppa

The government needs to set things right by developing policies that would link education to industries in order to curb unemployment.

This is why many companies conduct practical tests for their intending workers. Many were dropped because of this fact. Our schools and government should encourage practical training in schools

If a student is leaving school after how many years of studies, he should be able to come up with something of his own (entrepreneurship) having observed the state in which the country is. With the help of family he or should be able to stand. My own take on this though.

Here are some tips on how to get round unemployment.

    1. Believe in yourself

    2. Make plans on a profitable business

    3. Survey the posiblity of income and how to make huge profit from such business.

    4. Save up fund or take a loan

    5. Never rely on Nigerian Government for job. They are like NEPA (Not dependable)

    6. Do it yourslef

They go for less competitive courses how can you say you graduate from university with first class in physics eduatopn and you now trying to apply for job in a multinational company where will you see such offer from go for hot cake jobs that when you finish you know that don't need to start toiling under the sun for jobs.

Nigerians be wise I repeat shine your face.

You don't need the government to employ you before you become employed. Use the little knowledge you got from school, go to extra lessons to furnish the idea and knowledge, then apply your knowledge to become self employed.

  • As rightly stated in this article, a large number of graduates are produced year in year out without any laid down provision for them. To get better placement in terms of employment in this country require money and connection otherwise it's simply God's grace. Also our instituites have produced highly unemployable graduates who don't have any insight on building a sustainable economy from their own end.

    - Ndukwe Ikechukwu - 2019-10-02 21:58:33 Quote

  • In order to reduce unemployment the government can build offices and businesses they can make money from. This way the government will earn more and can put the money to use in making the country better and it can also reduce unemployment. They'll employ people and will also gain more money. It's a win win situation. They can also assist with funds so people can start their own businesses and become successful. One of the reasons why unemployment is rampant is because most people wait for jobs they don't go out there to look for other ways to earn like opening their own businesses or trying to find more ways. Most people even have their eyes set on just one place they don't want to work elsewhere. That's just wrong.

  • In trying to tackle the problems of unemployment, entrepreneurship skills should be included as compulsory courses to be offered by students. With the skills acquired, fresh graduates can engage in menial jobs.  Also, there should be accurate checks and balances of school officials,  that is, lecturers. They must be properly and efficiently trained to handle students. With the right trainings, lecturers are able to produce "fully baked" graduates ready to face the labour market head strong.
