Get Out Of The Triangle

Get Out Of The Triangle!!!

That's what I expect many of our Nigerian students to do! I intensely desire that our Nigerian student come out of that triangle.

Many students have grown to love our triangular life! Which is Hostel, Classroom, and Church!!! I am not saying you shouldn't go to these place. These are the reason you were actually sent to school but aside these places what next?

I remember during my N.C.E days these were my typical daily routine. No more No less. In fact even in that Umunze community where I schooled I didn't even know some places. I am not trying to say you should start gallivanting or wandering aimlessly around your school community but at least there's need to explore your school environment and community.

Now what am I trying to say? Recently i stumbled on a post by a Nigerian H.R. he said 'Nigerian students are not employable'. Listen its not because they didn't go to school nor because they don't come out with good result. And if this continues Nigerian graduates wouldn't compete with other African students. In my mind I was like with all these intelligent people we have in school they won't still be employable? So what's the problem?

The problem is that TRIANGLE! You may be wondering how and why a triangle is a problem. You see most students we encounter on daily basis have a well structured triangular movement like I earlier stated. They wake up in their hostel they move to the classroom after that they go to fellowship during fellowship activity days and when they don't go to fellowship they go back to the hostel, undress, eat, gist, read, watch movies sleep and continue the next day, next week, next month, next semester, next session, next year until they finally graduate in fact even with a first class! Oh I shake my small head gently for these category of people. But in my mind I pity them.

How can you stay in your school for four to five years without EXPERIENCE? I am not saying you should go and club or party or do nasty things in the name of getting exposure and experience.

By experience I mean get something doing aside your course of study. Or do you think all you need for LIFE would be gotten in the confine of your hostel, classroom and fellowship for the 4-5 year you are to spend there? A capital NO. It doesn't work that way. Who ever told you that lied to you.

Do you know in the confine of your school there are several opportunity that are bound for you? Only if you would ASK questions, make enquiries you would discover them. I believe that most Nigerian higher institutions has something to offer her students be it entrepreneurial classes, skill acquisition classes and many more. Just look around you and ask question you would be guided properly.

How can you be a final year student and you cannot write a formal letter. Our lecturer said why most people carry over his course is because they can't write a letter? You may be wondering what does that mean. When they come to rectify their result the lecturer tells them to make their request official by putting it to writing according to him the students run away and they rather rewrite the course. So how would this type of student write a C.V or letter of application?

How can you even be in Year two and your English is horrible? You don't know your tenses. Come closer let me lay hands and feet on you.

My sis was telling me of how a friend went for a job interview and he was taken to the swimming pool. Swimming  was part of the test. I was like for what na? It dawned on me that there's need for you and I to be versatile. Its not all about you law textbook, not all about physics diagram and other books! Its about you DEVELOPING yourself. I hope you know swimming is a life saving skill.

If I may ask which skills do you know and have? I want to openly tell you that skills has gone beyond baking, sewing, fashion and designing e.t.c. I hope you know interpersonal relationship is a skill, presentation and communication are skills highly needed, social media management and content marketing are highly sought for. My dear student please skill Up!

Learn languages if necessary I remember then when our school went on seven months strike. I learnt Chinese language and culture in a neighbouring community. Learn skills, learn computer hope you remember that the world is now a global village.

Vote and be voted for it helps Horne your leadership skill, interpersonal skill and speaking skills. Go to a different fellowship once in a while when your friend invites you to their fellowship for a special program, don't be so stereotyped at least honour that invitation. Build yourself, attend seminars online and physical there are some that are free while some you've got to pay, read books, join groups on Facebook and other social media that would help enhance the quality of your life to be productive, look for a PROBLEM and be a SOLUTION. Please volunteer in your little capacity. One day am going to share my life as a volunteer. As well, don't forget to learn and practice social etiquette. Know that you don't go to people's house empty handed, make the toilet comfortable for the next person, learn to use the five magic words. The one I would hammer you this morning is go and learn how to sell yourself. When you're asked who you're don't just open your mouth and say 'I am a student' for sure you're a student and I what? When you're asked that question what you're told to do is to tell what value you can offer, what problem can you solve?

I am using this opportunity to encourage our Nigerian students to come out of that TRIANGLE. The world is waiting for your manifestation so you can make that impact even as a student.

I just need you to tag a Nigerian student to read this. Thanks.

I write to add value, I hope you got value? we have you

Let's have a rethink.

Get out of the triangle - By Eunice Bassey - 2019-09-27 18:11:01

I appreciate this post and to be honest, it's the truth. I remember a quote someone said that he doesn't want his children to make a first class degree, not because it was wrong to make such but because he wanted his children to make time for other vital activities. The world today is a social place and when we continue with such 'triangular schedules ' if I may put it, we will be able to survive out there. I beseech our students to do more than this. Get out there and experience a world outside school, maybe learn a skill or two so that when we finally get to finish this school, we'll know how to continue living in it instead of learning afresh.

Wow a very wonderful write up, that's the truth and that's the problem with most Nigerian student.  In your tertiary level you have to be well equipped with so many things,  places, skills and your  social life should also be interesting and wow.

This is an eye opener that I wish every Nigerian student should read. What I realized from personal experience is that learning a new skill in conjunction with your academic activities helps in relieving academic stress and tension. You will always have that time you aren't thinking about exams or assignment. This will reduce the unnecessary tension. And let your side goal (I mean the new skill you are learning) be fun. Let it be something you enjoy. So that even if some stuff in your academics aren't particularly enjoyable, you can still have fun in that and learn something too

Wow! This is a very educating write-up. Cos it's really really true. A lot of people graduate with good grades but are unable to defend their results. And that part where "a year 2 student can't construct proper English", that's very terrible.

People need to really wake up and think of ways to improve themselves. There are many opportunities out there for people who are willing to take it.

Wow wow wow!!! This is a nice information for every Nigerian student. In actual fact, its good to be versatile. Learn to do new things daily and not to be repeating one process everyday. Not being versatile or not having wide knowledge if different things have made most students decapitated because they are not exposed to the changes occurring around them.

This is a very helpful post and educative one, students these days are too closed up which is too bad. University is a place to acquire all sorts of knowledge but out of a certain shallow mind set we limit it and there making things difficult for ourselves.

The idea is awesome and I must say that the University should also do courses like entrepreneurship from 100-400level so that students can be entrepreneurs before and after school, let them see every opportunity available for them in their environment

The triangle is real and many Nigerian students have unknowingly been participants of this routine. This writeup is a big eye opener to Nigerian students. Skills are very important to thrive in this present economy and there's no better time to acquire it than your school days. Many undergraduates can't even introduce themselves properly which is really appalling.

I really appreciate this article and I must say a big thank you to the author for bringing this up on this great platform. This is really a problem faced by most Nigerian students, I even remember vividly how my mom told me to live that triangular life in school lol. Please students should learn to relate out of their circle and learn about what’s going on outside the school life.

Thanks for this article, in my own opinion I would say, so many students who are graduates today at not work in due to unemployment and this ia very bad, cause it creates that mindset to other people who are not graduate and who doesn't have interest in going to school to stand firmly and start saying that school is scam ! No school is not the only problem is that students dont get employed easily

This writeup is nothing but the truth. I believe that in Nigeria universities, nobody wants to leave their comfort zone. We all prefer to be doing the same things all the time. Abroad, they learn different things. Their brains are always pit to work, busy doing things that are out of their comfort zone and that is how they grow. The triangle need to be destroyed. Do something new, meet new people, communicate better and you will go places

The post  said it all, its a wake up call for every youth and I appreciate you for taking out time to have it detailed.

Considering some points raised here, I remembered back then in school I used to watch alot of movies with my PC, but when I took  a decision to covert it to money venture, I went on my own to a small typist shop where I did almost all my paperwork in school, I had the hunger to learn how to type projects for people then. The woman out me through, in just one day, and I even jotted down some hey functions.

I started telling people that I now type project. I got my first 4jobs, which I delivered in less than 5days to my surprise, without a firsthand training on how to use a computer cux it was expensive to learn then.

The next day, after printing their work, and making all expense, I had #16,000 to myself, and that was my success story to becoming one of the most sort out typist in my school.

This is really amazing, good job. You said it all. That's just the absolute truth. If we can try developing ourselves, at first it might look like you are wasting your time but it will definitely pay later. Students should meet new people, learn new things because at the end of the day,. You can be employed through those you meet and relate well with or self employed with the things you learn. God bless you

Wow, this is wonderful. Nothing but the truth, it shouldn’t be just about schooling and getting a degree, we should get exposure and experience. Experience they say is the best teacher, putting ourselves within just lecture rooms, hostel, fellowship back to hostel won’t give us the experience we desire. Let’s explore wisely, students don’t have to get involved in unlawful acts before they get exposure, they don’t have to go to night clubs and be a prostitute in school before they get exposure. There are other way they can do that, I hope they get it tho!

Let go out of the triangle and learn more different things.

The only way to work with your degree is if you have an additional skill to offer the company maybe programming or graphic designing.

Really the average nigerian student mindset about school Is to attend class pass exams gradhate and start job hunting. This is very bad we have millions of students graduating every year with no job. Have education in scholl but most importantly have connections know people learn a trade take advantage of the internet. NNU is a good start but don't limit your self.

I must say that this is an educative speech that ought to be recognized. I perfectly understand your point and that we should be versatile. That a good route for anyone with intent of being a champion but permit me to say that, our education system is not appreciating. Am referring to the higher institution. People go to school, some with intent of being vast in their course of study, some is on an average scale. there is hardly a room for student to be widely versatile. Am not saying there are no student that is versatile, truely there is but 98percent of those persons GP is at stake. Nigerian education system is so tasking to comprehend extra curriculum activity. Student go to class morning till evening, there obviously is no time.

I hope am making sense

This is very informative for everyone especially for undergraduates who are still in the university. It is important that as a student, you should experience new things and don't just be limited to the triangular kind of life. You know you have an obligation to come out of school with good grades and all but that doesn't mean that you will limit yourself in other areas.

Go out to different places, meet different people as you go about your daily routine in school. When you do this, you get to relate very well with people and know places around you, not just your community alone.

I will not forget going to church too. This is as  important as going for lectures daily. As a student, you need to grow your spiritual life and remain faithful. Going to the library too is important for concentration while you study.
