Hepatitis B. A Virus Even More Deadly Than HIV/AIDS.

By - - [ Health ]

Hepatitis B virus infection has been on the rise in the recent decade and the most scary part is that as neglected as this virus is, it is more deadly than HIV/AIDS.

Hepatitis B virus infection starts when one is infected by Hepatitis B virus. The virus can be transmitted through sex, mother to child and even from transfusion of infected blood and sharing of sharp objects such as clippers, nail cutters and razor blade. Also, it can be transmitted through needle stick injury among health workers.

The signs and symptoms of this infection include yellowness of the eyes, hotness of the body, abdominal pain in the right upper part of the abdomen, abdominal swelling, passing dark coloured urine and pale stools, diarrhoea and vomiting. In the long run, if left untreated, it could lead to liver cancer.

The good news now is that in about 75% of people, the body's defence can clear the virus while the remaining will come down with the infection. Out of those infected, only about 5-10% would progress to liver cancer. I know the number looks small but just imagine 5-10% of Nigeria's population, you would realize its not so small afterall.

An even better news is that there is a vaccine for those that have no been infected and in most government hospitals,it costs not more than #500 to get a dose. Three doses are required for a 5 year protection, after which booster doses are given.

If caught early, it can be cured and the best advice is to visit a hospital when one has these symptoms and if one does not, its better to get vaccinated.

We can with awareness eradicate this deadly virus.

Be it hepatitis B or HIV, God will never let it be our portion. It's always so painful to be sick. I remember when I was young I used to pray to fall sick so that my parent can ask me what I want to eat, then I will mention that food I have been dreaming to eat. Back then the food I love most used to be pounded yam and egusi soup or bread and fried egg. Then I later realize that when I fall sick, this food don't taste the same way as when I'm healthy.

The hepatitis B virus is very deadly but it's not known to most people this infection as little as it sounds it is more deadly than HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS dies in a host when the host dies but hepatitis B virus doesn't die even when the host is dead. Unlike HIV/AIDS, it can live for months on a non living host without dying. This disease is not well known to people so I implore us to share it with our friends and loved ones.

Hepatitis B & C are viral infections that cause the inflammation of the liver and destruction of liver cells. These are also the most commonly prevalent forms of Hepatitis and can develop into chronic cases of Hepatitis over a period of time. Hepatitis B & C are caused by

  • Contact with infected blood & fluids
  • Unsafe blood transfusion
  • Unsafe sexual practices
  • Using of infected needles, razors etc.
  • Improper sterilization of medical equipment

So in my opinion i will say hepatitis B is more dangerous than HIV/AIDS

Both HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B are deadly and incurable. I think what makes the latter more threatening is due to it's mode of transmission. HIV can be transmitted just through blood but Hepatitis B virus is transmitted through contact with the body fluid (eg: saliva, sweat, csf, blood, breast milk, etc) of an infected person.

I heard from a seminal that was conducted for us at my place of work. But my question is that, if it is that easily contact, how then can we be safe except God Himself make it far away from us.

Those who die of liver cancer or liver cirrhosis resulting from Hepatitis B is really not because of the virus itself but of ignorance; most people barely know they have it... Until it is in the deadly stage. But if one is tested and treated, live can be managed to some reasonable years.
