How The Tortoise Shell Broke

At the beginning of time the tortoise were very fast animals they could run any race and their shell was still intact

There was a party at the Heavens gate and the Lord invited the animals and the humans to the party.

They all have their selves silly names the peacock's name was come over to my room, the tortoise's name was all of you, the cobra's name was come and take etc

In the party they brought a very huge pot of garnished food and told all of them"all of you" to eat it, when the long necked animals saw this they informed the other animals and in a full force, the big foot of the elephant, Komodo dragon, rhinoceros, hippopotamus etc smashed the tortoise shell and it broke, they smashed all his bones and threw him down to Earth.

His wife quickly cought him and took him to the doctor owl, who did not go to the party, and it glued Mr tortoise shell, the tortoise walked so slow because of his broken bones and when they had children they were all dominantly slow and took after their daddy's broken Shell.

His wife died out of a broken heart, that is why we can not see any fast tortoise or a tortoise without a broken Shell.

  • Did tortoise really had a smooth back from the unset?

"Carapace" that's what's its back is actually called.. Right from when I was young,  have heard different story about how tortoise broke it's back but the true fact to this story is that tortoise never once had a smooth back like its relation "Turtle ".

Tortoise  back had been rough right from creation.. .

  • Its an interesting story that can give an example of how tortoise are today, but you shoud know, thats not exactly what happen to tortoise, no one knows how tortoise was created or when it was created but in all its an enjoyable story to be told to little kids.

  • I've heard this story before when I was in the secondary school but I could not comprehend if it was really true to the fact that tortoise are slow. My instincts tell me it's just a fabricated story but one that teaches morals. Tortoise are naturally slow from creation (Smiles). A good story though

  • This is wonderful. It makes me remember when I was little in the village. We would sit at under the moonlight to hear stories from my grandfather. He would say "Alo o" and we would reply, "Aalo." Such good old days.

Thank you for making me remember the tortoise story

  • Wow, my grand mother used to tell me this story then except that her's took a more moral view where all flying birds lend tortoise few of their feather to fly to heaven for the meeting and after tortoise played a fast game on them, they collected their feathers leaving tortoise to fall back from heaven and snail was actually the animal that glue him which he(tortoise) also killed after promising not to harm him(snail).

  • A funny one there again. Tortoise and his shell story does remind most of us of childhood days. Although my own version of tortoise and the reason for his broken shell is a little different from this but also as funny also. Thanks for bringing me good childhood memories.

  • Hmmmm, nice story, but the most important thing is the lesson learnt from this story. Whatever you do today either good or bad will surely affect you in the future.

So leave your life very well so that your generation will pray for you when you will be no more.

    Moral of the story.

  • Hahahahahaha. Wow this is a really great story I've heard many tortoise stories but non like this one ,it's such a petty that the modern age children might not get to hear about this wonderful stories,or take part in the adventurous encounters we had.

  • Wow this brings back a lot of childhood memories, really nice and it's does pass on a message that applies to all

Aside from that it's kinda surprising that such a topic (story) can be approved and others that carry messages that have a greater impact on people lives are considered trash.

  • I've heard of the story while in primary school. The story in a nutshell teaches us that one should not always be greedy in everything, we should also look out for others. The tortoise shells won't have break hadn't been he was covetous and greedy

  • Hmmm its a story indeed, the one I heard during my JSS 1 class was that all the animal collected their feathers from him and threw him down and his (Toitoises wife) had prepared a bed full of broken bottles for him to land on, and he landed on the broken bottles and made his shell to cracks...

Moral lesson: Think twice before any action to be taken because it affect the future...

  • The story reminds me of a particular phrase that says ...survival is only for the fittest. It's a pity that Mr Tortoise allowed himself to be treated that way because of food.                                            Thank God for his wife who took him to Mr Owl to fix his broken shell. Maybe Mr Owl also did something to the DNA of Mr Tortoise because when the children of Mr Tortoise were delivered, the children resembled their father having the same broken shells. What a pity!

  • I have heard this story during my child hood. But the lesson from this story is that we should be mindful of what we do today for it not to be upon our children children. Because the children of the tortoise are the one suffering it now.

  • Growing up, my dd used to tell me all these stories😍 and I enjoyed them so much. Sadly folktale is slowly fading away and overthrown by phones and gadget. Our traditional life has been excessively refined.

  • I have heard this story many times and its always told in different ways. for example, there is one that says the tortoise fell off a hill and broke his shell and it was repaired by ants. The importance of the story is that actions have consequences.

But this story has been told and retold over and o er and over again to the extent that I'm not even sure if the true story is in circulation. when we come to fact we realise that the tortoise never once had a smooth back, I can go ahead to say that was how God created but why? no one can tell. that's just my opinion

  • Folktales.. So true and believeable but really didn't happen, but all forktales has massages that it carries out. Tortoise has always had many stories on why his back is like that but most of the stories center's around greediness.

  • My grandma used to say the tortoise was very greedy that he wanted to attend a party for birds in heaven so he asked vulture to carry him on its back the vulture told him he must not talk on their way because the tortoise will be using its mouth to hold the tortoise back. On their way he forgot the advice that the vulture gave him he fell down and broke his shell

    - Haryhormhedey Emmanuel - 2019-10-12 18:15:20 Quote

  • Yes that's a good story which was all about tortoise and his greediness which made him have a rough shell, but we all know that tortoise was created like that but the story teaches us of not to be greedy but in the story tortoise pretended to be wise but don't know he wasn't which he even gave himself a name "all of you" which he  beared at the party but at the process the other animals had to smash him and throw him to earth cos of his greediness thats why tortoise had a rough shell till date .

  • Interesting story of the Tortoise and I really love this story back in the  days when I was in the primary school. It was very interesting usually composed my story,  I don't even know where the books are now so it was a very nice story indeed that's really inspired many people to be very smart in life to look forward to what they're going to do to achieve at any cost,  you have to sacrificed something very special to get what you want or you know you can manipulate it all around but still yet it is good for the story so I love this story very much thank you for sharing.
