Is There Really An African Philosophy?

Over the years, it's been a major point of argument between African and European philosophers if truly there's anything called an African philosophy. These European philosophers argue that Africans don't have a philosophy because of the problem of documentation, methodology, language and logic, and so on. On the other hand, Africans argue that there is African philosophy since philosophy does not necessarily need documentation before it could be called a philosophy, it involves the general worldview of a people. And besides, Socrates who's the father of Western philosophy never documented his philosophy but was documented by his student Plato.

So what do you think? Is there an African philosophy?

Africa does have. Philosophy and culture

It can be seen through oral tradition, archeology and cultural organization

  • There is an African Philosophy.. They are actually a lot... Some are good and some are nice...

Some cultural beliefs affects the way we Africans live.. Like divorcing a woman because she couldn't bear a male child.. But an adoptable norm is the level of respect they have for each other..

  • African philosophy is the philosophical discourse

produced by indigenous Africans and their

    descendants, including African /Americans. ...

Philosophy in Africa has a rich and varied history,

some of which has been lost over time.

African philosophy does exist. It is difficult to

characterise, as it is quite varied, and as far as I can

see, it has one somewhat unfortunate feature: African

philosophy more than any other “regional” philosophy

is very focused on itself, i.e. on what it is to be

African or, indeed, to do African philosophy – what is

the African perspective or experience of the world.

    Another problem with characterising African

philosophy is that there exist very few written texts in

African philosophy, it being mostly spread and

maintained through stories, songs, poems, and other

    oral traditions.

  • African Philosophy is a disputed term, partly because it is not clear if it refers to philosophies with a specifically African theme or context (such as distinctively African perceptions of time, personhood, etc.), or just any philosophizing carried out by Africans (or even people of African descent). African philosophy truly exists.

  • Philosophy means love of wisdom and we have people who over the years have set a particular way of life with their rich knowledge of our culture. THis is what African philosophy is.

  • I really don't know much about the philosophy of Africa, but I heard the Europeans came to Africa for some some and it was somehow realized that there is a actually a Philosophy in Africa, for lack of inadequate information

  • An absolute answer is that there exists an African phisolophy without much arguments. The main reason I said that is because any nation that have have people in it should definitely have a philosophy because those people would obviously have forefathers and people that were on the same land before them. In addition, this fact remains intact outside africa i.e not affected by the colour of the nation. Thank you

  •  I believe there is an African philosophy. Though as you said lack of documentation is one of the problem but then philosophy to me is a way of life. It is how Africans view things and I think we have our own views when it comes to issues. How philosophy is a reflection of our culture

    1. Epistemology

    2. Axiology

    3. philosophy of human existence

    4. Logic

    5. Ethics

and so on philosophy is love and also wisdom.

it can also be defined as the "LOVE OF WISDOM"

  • There is an African philosophy called "The Negritude" which was adopted in the 1890's, it has to do with the way we think as blacks, the way we see life our culture and the world around us. And this movement was in our favour.

  • There is indeed an African philosophy, in fact philosophy originated from Africa. The Greeks who claim to be the originators of philosophy all came to Egypt to study. The Egyptians taught them what they know. Even the word philosophy is of African origin but you won't find this in any European history books unless you look deeper into the history of philosophy. Socrates, Aristotle, etc all came to Egypt to study

  • I’m actually not surprised about the argument between European and African philosophers because it’s been like that over time that they’d feel more superior to us and would eventually want to imbibe their own point of views for us to believe. Africa definitely has a Philosophy.

  • There is an African philosophy in the sense that our ways of life differs totally with that of the Europeans. The African philosophy I will argue is even more superior to the Europeans because the lack home discipline and respect in the sense that an European child can say what so ever rubbish to his parents unlike the African Child.

  • I remember quite well that when I was in 100level that African Philosophy was part of Logic and philosophy, a general study we were all compelled to do. Fine, Philosophy may have its root in the Greek. Africa as well have their believe that calls for further inquiry even till present  date.

  •  There's an African Philosophy. Most Western countries really neglect blacks because we are Africans. Our ways of life differs from the IRS, our thinking, our food, our dressing, our language and also our social life. We Africans practice our culture very well but due to Western enlightment brought into the country , we try to imitate the western countries which is very bad and not accepted .

  • There is an African idealism which is the bedrock of our culture. An idealism is implanted in our mind and we leave with it and pass them from generations to generations. Philosophy is the structure of our life and makes us different from each other. It is to be documented to show how it has helped and evolve. So in this case I will side with the Europeans.
