Mass Failure And High Rate Of Suicide Among Students, Who Is To Be Blamed ?

By - - [ Opinion ]

Who is to be blamed for mass failure and the increasing rate of suicide among students over poor academic performance?

In many higher institutions today in Nigeria, the rate of student that are depressed and committing suicide over poor academic performance is quite high. Some people are of the opinion that, the students failed due to lack of commitment to their academics and when the exam is finally around the corner, they start looking for every means to pass which is not possible.

Some other people think there are some students who prepare rigorously and still end up failing and they think this is because most lecturers are sadist and they don't want the student to graduate with good CGPA.

Let's hear your opinion, who do you think is to be blamed; the students, guidance or the lecturers?

In some cases, lecturers are at fault, while in some cases, students are at fault, am a living witness, while in some cases, is all about luck, is not about reading hard, you need to read smart, you might end up reading hard, at the end, you will fail woefully, but you might be coordinate yourself and read smart, with God on your side, you will pass all your courses

I will blame the student for committing suicide because in as much as the lecturer teach you and u concentrate attentively and u take ur studies seriously there is no way u wont pass that exam or test and u talking about a lecturer been a sadist everyone has challenges we face as human but u bringing it to a work place is nothing to write home about, lecturer been a sadist may have caused him to be like that because of how student would have treated him in the past.

In my own view I think the lecturers and guardian has most of the faults with them because in nowadays institutions lecturerees don't take their tine to lecture their student well and the guardians are the ones who are suppose to call the students, sit them down and talk to them on what to do and how to make but instead they do other things. Tome I think this two sides need adjustment in most institution.

Wow.. this is a good one, I feel some lecturers are to be blamed, some of them don't actually want students to pass.

But on the other hand, some students don't even prepare till when exams are close, then when they fail they start feeling it's the lecturer.. everybody actually has a role to play.

Think about it

The students are to be blamed for that because going to school you are not sent their to play you are sent their to learn but most of the students who fail in there education it is as a result of not planning......

Also the lecturers are sometimes to be blame because they do want to have their ways with some students and when the student refuse the lecturer will fail the student and this also can cause suicide......

I think the students are the to blame, why because I think in this life, if you know what you are doing doing I don't any Jupiter can stand your way. If as a student you wrote exam very well, you quiet sure you did well and a lecturer may be becouse of hatred or one thing other refuse to allocate marks to your score you have the right to write to the senate for remarking. I believe judgment will prevail in that aspect.

There is no specific reason to a student's failure. It all depends on the truth. Nigerian Universities have these belief that the higher the first class the lesser the quality of the school and they tend to male students fail easily but then there are people who do not prepare well for exams and end end trying to pack everything a week before the exams

The truth of the matter remains that most lecturers have already vowed that there students will not attend a certain grade.because of fear if being sacked. This is mostly seen where for instance first class students are given automatic employment.these lecturers having fear that these younger students if continue to make first class might end up getting them sacked they thereby resort to frustrating there students so  that these students will not make it into this automatic employment.this is something that really need to be looked into

Everyone has a fault in this regard.

The students ought to know suicide is never close to the solution of depression, they should be orientated.

Also,it is of true facts that someone lecturers appear as sadists, hence, establish fear on the minds of students and also fail them in purpose at times. This is because some of them do not want any student to have more than their own CGPA .Lecturers should be warned against this kind of threats towards  students, and also if any is found guilty,It is of best opinion that there should be authorities in place that will attend to any found guilty

The aspect of the guardian,he/she should be able to monitor his/her ward's movement.

If all of these are in place,I feel suicide should reduce to an extent.

I think its the faults of Academic institutions, in Nigeria. Let's take me for a case study I'm a Mass communication students 100l studying 14 courses with additional 3 practicals suming up to 17. In western countries the maximum amount of courses taking by a Mass communication students 100l is less than 9.

Now the question is how do I cope, with incessant test and continuous assesement test and sales of text book amounting to over #50,000. How do students from poor backgrounds cope. The institutions are lacking empathy and human consideration of the poor kids from financially non stable homes. This is very absurd I think Nigeria should look into this. Its the major cause of suicide in academic institutions.

Well it depends on the situation. Students always want the easy way out. How can you have exam in 2 days and start reading for the exam to pass just in two days. When the syllabus takes 13 weeks or so. At the end of the day some even start looking for life questions.

Also some lecturers too contribute to the failure of the students. How? By setting out of syllabus. How on Earth will the students pass. Even if they prepare well they end up having one point. Which is critical to their cgpa.

Mass failure, though mostly the students fault but also lectures. Imagine a lecturer coming to the class for he first time and telling the students they already had F in his course. This will in anyway create fair in these students mind and might lead to their failure. The students part is that they are always looking for a shortcut to pass exams thereby engaging in many unusual reading type which leads many to commuting suicide when the result is released.

During lecture days most of them find it difficult to go for classes but they enjoy involving themselves in it activities. When its time for exam, they now seek for help that is not possible. The only way students can stop commiting suicide is for them to know what they are doing and face their studies squarely.

Some lecturers are so harsh and when you tell them you read, you buy their handout, their books, you came to der class frequently, you wrote der attendance, they will still give capital letter "TF" Total failure. The students because we have to be responsible for our action, you do nit need to get into the university if you are not matured enough to handle intense pressure, bear this in mind; people are always out there to make your life miserable, your ability to ruse up able them is what makes you a victor. The institutuin because most of the rules set by these institutiins makes it so difficult for the students to protect themselves. The lecturers also because they just make such rules that make the lives of students miserable. For this to reduce i strongly believe the these three factors needs to be addressed.

Student, Lecturer, Government and Parents/Guardians are to be blame.

Some lecturer may not come to lecture room throughout the semester and told students to buy books in other to make money from the poor students

In most institution,  there are no social amenities. Students need electricity to read their books but still there is lack of electricity.

Some students beliefs when they enter tertiary institution. There is no need DC to read again which caused mass failure.

Parents/Gurdians mount too much pressure on their students. Some parents may even go far in selecting course for their child without care weather he like it or not.

Most lecturers have found lecturing in more than one institution which lead to shortage of time and inadequate lectures delivery to students, and at the end, they will ended up giving out course outline to students to read during their examination. So, what do you expect if not failure.
