Nigerian Universities Workers Begin Strike

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) have commenced a five-day industrial action.

The directive by the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU was issued to all branch chairmen of the unions across the country on Friday.

It explained that the action was as a result of the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government.

The workers accused the government of failing to show firm commitment towards resolving the issues raised by the unions, including the payment of earned allowances to members.

Will Strike provoke the Government to action?

  • I don't think that strike will cause any change.  But the way FG has been handling allowance issues has not been encouraging. I think they should renegotiate for the sake of the students.

  • Our government don't take important aspect of our future serious and it's very bad. If they accepted the terms previously that means what the University bodies are fighting for is righteous .As such the government should please do the needful and solve this problem soonest. If it is strike that's the only tool they have any other strategy will simply not be welcome by the government .

  • A strike alone might not be the solution. Peaceful protests should be made by the members of these associations across the country, if possible, students inclusive. Or else, they won't get paid and students would have to wait longer.

  • The truth is strike does no longer sound like a threat to the government. Another strategy should be developed since the government is no longer moved by strike. Even FG and these unions reach agreement, there is every possibility that they will not comply

  • This general strike is of enormous historical importance for the workers and the people of Nigeria in general. It is a further step in the revolutionary awakening of the Nigerian masses. The next few days will put to the test the leaders of the Nigerian labour movement though it is not a sure means to provoke the government because strike has been happening yet nothing is done about it, it's really hard working when your not been paid for it... so i really hope it will come to an end soon because everyone is also affected by it too

The Nigerian universities workers can't do anything, it will be better for them to call off the strike.

  • I believe in strike that it actually works because strike is a union of workers putting a stop to their regular activities in order to demand for what rightly belongs to them or what they have been deprived of and the government will surely have to look into it so everything goes on well

  • Over time, the norms of this country is that the government won't attend to some agencies if they have not seen a strike action. But this is wrong.

Integrity makes you promise a thing and do it at the specified time it was promised. But we lack integrity among the government leaders which is why if they don't see a strike or  solidarity walk, they won't be prompted to action.

    - Tosin Ojumu - 2019-08-29 07:30:22 Quote

  • The union has been going for strike countless times and the government has not done much to reduce this issues. I don't think strike action scares the government, the student And the workers in those school are left to suffer.
