Religious Theories: Pluralism And Exclusivism.
Man has been defined as a religious being, mainly because about 84% of the world's population is said to be affiliated with one religion. Moreso, there are over ten thousand(10,000) distinct religions in the world today, which the most popular ones include- Buhddism, Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism etc. Since there are diversity of religions in the world, many have asked, which religion is superior? Is it just one religion or all religions? Which religion can be truly attributed to the Real God? Or in another form, which religion relate man to the true God if there is one at all?
Various scholars of philosophy, religion etc., have provided some theories towards the diversities of religions. And this is where I intend to educate us today.
These theories are religious exclusive theory, religious pluralistic theory and religious inclusive theory. Taking them one after the other, religious exclusive theory, otherwise known as religious exclusivism is the doctrine that, of all thousands of religions in the world, just one of them is the true religion, the superior and unique one that is truly recognized by God.
The religious Pluralists, just like the name denotes, argues in contrary to the exclusivists, that all religions are true and superior in their respective practices, all religions works toward the same ends, therefore no religion is superior to another but all equally relate man to God.
Religious inclusivism stands in between the former theories and argues that they are both right. All religions are true and superior but one or some of them is superior to the others, but this superiority does not mean that the others are useless. In conclusion, Pluralists believes in the uniqueness of all religions, the exclusivists says other, that only one is unique, true and superior, the inclusivists supports the Teo claims but denies the uselessness of any religion.
So I will end with a question, having educated us on this topic, if at all we learned something, what is our opinion about these theories? Which of them do we support and why?
