Scabies, A Rare But Dangerous Illness!

I can vividly remember 9 months ago, I woke up at about 2 am, with an unbearable and intensive itches on my lap. I couldn't help but scratch it all. The sweetness coming from scratching was overwhelming and unbearable. You would never want to get your fingers off. At first, I thought it was normal heat rash. The very next night the same thing happened, but nothing of such happens to me at day time. Nights went by and it keeps coming. The itches would only stop when I take my bath at night. It got so worse that I started having red rashes and swellings in my Laps and around my vital organs. Then I went to the hospital, explained, and the doctor said it was a bacterial and viral infection, and I was given series of injections. But night went by and the same itches kept  reoccurring and even worse.

This time, I couldn't sleep at all, I could stay all night scratching, it was really a painful experience, at some point, I would cry almost all night. I took herbal drugs and soaps but still no changes. At this time, I was almost spending closed to #15000 for drugs and treatments. But no changes at all. One very day, I told my friend about it and explained every bit of it, and the next thing I heard from his mouth was 'it is SCABIES'. That was the first time I ever heard such name. So let me educate you about scabies.

Scabies well known as a parasitic disease caused by small tiny mite identify as Sarcoptes scabiei which causes an untold and unbearable itches to the body. The mite cannot live in any surface or anywhere for more than two days, it dies thereafter, unless in the body. So when it finds it way to the human skin, it can stay for up to two days before burrowing into the body and stays beneath surface of the skin, after which it stays there for days before laying its eggs weeks after weeks.

If not treated, it continues laying the eggs which could lead to thousands of mites in your body, thereafter, it forms a pimple-like red rash on the affected areas of the skin. Places where the mites like to burrow are the laps and breast regions. Scabies is spread easily, a contact with an infected person is enough to be infested in you. Other ways of contracting scabies are sharing same clothing, beddings and using objects already used by an infected person. So it can be spread among family members, roommates, friends, colleagues etc. Even in school, work place and most especially, crowded areas.

Now, For a person who has not been infected by scabies before, it takes up to 5-6 weeks before the symptoms begins to show up. But for someone who has been infected before, it takes about 3-4 days for the symptoms to show up. When infected, avoid contact with others to prevent spreading. However, the itches can be stopped temporarily by pouring cold water on the affected areas.
Scabies can be contracted by any one, rich or poor. It is very much important to keep your clothes clean as the mite can hang on to it for a day. However, There are so many drugs or creams to use when infected like permethrin cream, Benzyl benzoic, aloe Vera and its injection.

Once the symptoms start showing, the best advice is to visit a doctor immediately and you will be treated. My treatment lasted for 1 week.

One sure way to avoid scabies is to ensure you don't share the same with another person and then keep your beddings and underwears clean always.

  • After treating scabies, the itch often gets worse for a few days. Itching can persist for several weeks, but usually gets better within a month. In the meantime, you can relieve the itching of scabies by using a skin moisturiser or over-the-counter antihistamine medicine taken by mouth.

  • Yeah. A pretty terrible disease. I once got infected only by sharing a bed with an infected person. I immediately knew what it was and went straight to the hospital unlike him who took days observing it and hoping it would go on its own.

When a person catchesscabies, pregnant female mites dig burrows in the skin and lay eggs along the way. ... Havingscabies is not a sign that someone is dirty, careless or sexually promiscuous.

  • This is interesting, indeed I think this borders on general hygeine from the use of clean water, antiseptic for bathing and to ironing of clothes at least before wearing them. This parasite from the post are facultative so when the above is observed they cannot thrive and we can be free from them.

Then visit an hospital for proper treatment and always stay clean. You don't need dirt adding to what you're already battling with. Educative post

  • To the best of my knowledge, Scabies is a skin infestation caused by a microscopic mite called the human itch mite (sarcoptes scabiei) it stays on the upper layer of a person's skin where it lives and lays two to three eggs each day and can be prevented by using a Permethrine cream, go to any pharmacist and they would prescribe it for you.
