Surviving As An Underground Artist

Being an artist in nigeria is very difficult, as there a a lot of other artist trying. You have to watch even those who are not good as you are pop and get oppportunities.

The music industry can be very unpredictable, one song could take you very far and one could bring you down. The promotion though, is very neccessary. it helps you build a fan base and draw traffic to your music.

Most ucoming artist try to pop by doing covers of sonf of already popping artists and post them on social media platforms like twitter and instagram. tags are very important for promotion. This helps a lot because it creates a better chance of the artist or/ and fans finding your page. you could also get the help of social media managers for promotion, all these are neccesary criterias to get your music out to the world.

Your content is also very important. well as some artist make music without content amd still pop, it is only for a specific period of time. Lately, we nigerians just look for any song with a vibe, but if you notice, those artist only pop for so long, and their name is no longer heard. this leads me to my next point

it is also very necessary to follow trend. Artist like davido stay relevant because they dont stay on a spot, whatever moves, they move with it. Your ability to be flexible is very important

money is also important, money helps advertisment, in turn helping you push yourself and your musi

hope your informed :)

  • In short, its a very time, energy and capital intensive venture of which someone has to be properly prepared to handle trying times especially when theyre unknown. Wishing all upcoming artists the best of success as they pursue their dreams, just remember to stay true to yourself and your art and if its for you, God will see you through.

  • I'lld say that in Nigeria as a country, music as a career is something worth going for. Nigerians trend with music alot. The lyrics doesn't really matter. I'll agree with your perspective of money you said there. Money and fame is what you need to keep you sustained. And of course, money brings the fame. Lyrics count less.

  • The music industry here in Nigeria like other parts of the world is very capital intensive as it requires a lot of funds for production and promotion purposes. One has to also be commited, consistent, talented, hardworking and avoid pride. Although talent is important but money is of more importance.

  • Excelling in Nigeria through music isn't easy eaoacially if you lack financial support or sponsorship. Upcoming artists go through a lot of hard times and the competition out there bears a lot of heat. The industry has godfathers and you might have to succumb to their wills before you can make it big out there. Make prayer your daily routine and nurse your faith in God Almighty.

  • Well first of all you make sure you have very good music, and just mean a lot of very good music lined up for more than 3 albums and then the celebrity charisma and swag then you really need to start from the scratch thats if there's no one to sponsor or endorse you as an artist

  • Social media is a very powerful tool for upcoming. It has really Done very well, not only to music, but entertainment in general.

Another avenue is all this talent shows(but most people are not opportune though), but it's really a big platform too.

  • As an upcoming artist in Nigeria, I believe we should all stay true to our own sound and not try to copy. Also don’t enter into the music industry and make money be your drive because to be honest it won’t be enough motivation for you to go far. Do it for the passion of it, later on when you’re known for your art then money will come by the side.

  • This doesn't happens in Nigeria alone, its everywhere and that the state music as a whole find's  itself now, you young artist trying to have fan base by doing covers of songs by popular artist just to be noticed. Another factor is that the number of record labels in Nigeria is too much and its not helping the industry everyone wants to own a lebel therefore artist keep falling in the wrong hands.

Someone like Olamide has made a very good foundation as far as music is concern .he shuffles is music with good and bad one  which keep Nigeria still listening to his tracks.

But God's grace is all that is needed after all, it's God that bring people up and also bring them down. Everyone just need to stay focused on what he or she does and keep praying for grace.

Most of them have been voiced, while the rest are still in my music book. The music industry is quite difficult to get into I must say.

  • Surviving as an underground artist is very difficult in Nigeria and challenging due to no promotions from the record labels you join,no shows been done. They will just make the underground artist be singing in bars that people will not see them well and most people running record labels for underground artist don't even have sponsors yet collecting money from the artists

  • In Nigeria, surviving as an underground or upcoming artist as it is fondly called is not a n easy task. Music have become a business for some and a way of life for others. Financial support and publicity is needed for both parties which more people fail to get. Living as an underground artist is really not easy especially you have good songs and messages to pass out and you do not have the support and backing you need.

  • Thank you for educating some of our upcoming artists. The Government can also help by supporting some of these upcoming artists financially. The local government council chairman can help sponsor some artists from his local government with little cash.                      State government can also help our upcoming artists to move forward.          Money is key to moving very fast when the talent is discovered.

  • I believe as an underground artist having talent is very key to remain relevant and also building your own sound not just being a version two of already made artists. No doubt Monet is very important and proper publicity but all these will be in vain if don't have your own niche.

  • An upcoming artist in Nigeria is always a new bee to the music industry, sometimes record lebels can be frustrating in Nigeria we know well fully of some record rebels that got some up coming Nigeria artist down and other got them very up and put them on a high level, sometimes you as an up coming artist , needs to follow rules and regulations on the record level you are, most times upcoming artist need to relax and things before dropping hit songs because when you just started you need to go slowly you don’t have to drop all your hits songs you have at once because that’s what kills most upcoming artist, for an underground artist you need to pray and work hard, music is a way of life not a traditional scheme. Everyone loves music because it’s relaxes nerves and with the vibes it changes moods of some people, learn to always look for opportunities, doing collaboration with other artist, try to make points.

    - King Gerald - 2019-09-27 23:02:57 Quote

  • Becoming an artist is a long way to go. Even a lot of upcoming musicians don't see the importance of studying music as a course which would help them to know more about music and attain more height in the music industry

    - Omoloye David - 2019-09-27 23:30:34 Quote

  • Every work one needs to invest in requires some amount of capital. The young artist needs capital to start up his project. Some get fortunate enough to have sponsors while others are not that fortunate. Be it as it may be, making headway in the music industry is somewhat tasking because of the height of competition there within. The young artist, if the capital isn't an obstructing phenomenon, must work really hard to either follow strictly well with the flow of the rhythm or be able to make a super hit that will change the tide.

  • Well being an underground artist is very stressful especially in Nigeria where your talent mean little especially when you dont have the needed connection and all...Then the promoters and other facilitators won't want to help for free some even sigh outrageous bargains just to get into the industry so I give kudos to all underground artist y'all are trying

  • Yes , nigeira upcoming artist are not surviving though you need more money and someone to link you up as in connections also the lycris of the song should be dope and the hit must be one out of all. But why can't we focus on rap song than pop. I love it cause it is more inspiring. I'm not saying pop is not good maybe a new artist should start something different.

    - Abimbola Olafioye - 2019-09-28 20:30:28 Quote

  • Yes,  the content of the songs also matters a lot,  although most Nigerians just want to ride with the wave and make songs that literally fade out few months later, It would also be nice if our artistes could make songs that impact us in a more positive aspect individually and nation wise.
