The Fate Of A 3rd Class Graduate In Nigeria

By - - [ Education Opinion ]

Living in Nigeria with a third class degree certificate is dreadful, I wonder why our institutions still award the said class of degree in our tertiary institutions.

A third class graduate is perceived as a failure, someone who probably was not physically present in the four walls of the university as at the time the student was admitted into the institution.

The class  of degree most times is attributed to the sloppy approach the student must have given to his/her studies, irrespective of the conditions under which such grades were given.

Guidance and counseling officers are not introduced into our educational system, to harness and cultivate a foundation of purposeful and decisive pursuit of academic knowledge in Nigeria, hence many misdirect choice in the course of study by the young untrained minds for academic excellence.

The employer of labour has stigmatised that class of degree in Nigeria, making better class of degrees employable and third class graduates relegated to sole proprietorship and otherwise.

In all the various scenarios highlighted so far, one begin to wonder where it all became wrong for the fate of students graduating with a third class degree in Nigeria....

I think the world now is not so much about your degree, I think it's about your level of creativity, intelligence quotient and balanced with your emotional intelligence because a lot of people who even have their Masters don't even think well, so I don't believe that we should be measured by the standard of university degree whether first class second class or 4th class besides someone said that the new degree now is masters degree so it means that education is a continuous thing

In my own understanding being a third class graduate does not mean you are the most dullest in the class. Because , Our country Nigeria is a place where if you have the money , even without attending lectures often or do class assignment reguarly , you can still be among the first class student at the end of your programme. With the level of corruption in Nigeria, First class position does not always justified the most brilliant student in the school.

I think our institutions should stop giving students 3rd class degree award because in a country like this where even the first class are struggling to get job in the labour market, I don't think any company will want to consider a 3rd class degree holder.

I really do not buy to the idea of having to know my grade before giving me a job. What I can offer should be first a priority to the employer before any other thing comes up.

I believe the system should encourage people to have something to offer rather than solely depending on the class of degree.

One thing we have failed to understand is whether in Nigeria or elsewhere, the prosperity, fate and life success is not tied to the class of degree one comes out with and some have allowed their class of degree to define them while others have been made lazy because of initial good school grade.

Whether third class or first class, ones destiny has to play out and don't allow the class of degree to define you but define your future by working on your self. Thanks

Even though having a good grade matters, our sucesss, fate and destiny is not tied by it. So I feel universities should stop giving third class grade and companies should employ graduates based on what their intellectual not grade.

Considering the way things are foigo on now in the world, you don't necessarily have to depend on your degree because the world is seriously changing with speed. So you need to have a skill that are good in in order to succeed.

To my own understanding, the world we live in now isn't about degree, I think creativity is what we need, you may not even go to school and become very rich in the future, don't forget bill gate was a dropout. And 3rd degree doesn't make us, creativity and focus will made us what we will become in the future.

In my own point of view third class should not be the problem, the problem is sitting down without doing anything.. Even if we are schooling we should all try and own petty business that will help us if we are done schooling and not to wait for our result because even first class graduate this days don't have job, so let wake up and start our business who knows before we finish school it might grow to something else big that even if they brought job to your doorstep you will reject it, collecting salary is far different from being an entrepreneur of your own because money comes in everyday not every month.

At times you can not predict what class of award you will fall into. If you are not a serious student you can fall into that. Your lecturers may be responsible for it. And there are many other factors that can be responsible for it.

The fate of third class degree to me is fast winding off and sooner or later the National university commission would scrap out or stop the award of a 3rd degree. Going by the present scenario where second class upper division are still roaming the streets with CVs.

One thing our employers should also look into is that graduating with a 1st class degree does not make one perfect or to excel when it comes to handling job responsibility

A detailed research and reality by an American Paramount personnel, Roberts Kiyosaki, has shown that First class people works for third class people while second class people works for the government. This implies that Success is not been determined by degree. So there must be people that will pass and people that will fail in school examinations, But in real life, Only God can take you there.

I don't know why they still award the degree. In a country where unemployment rate is very high, they still award 3rd class degree. Although there are some 3rd class graduates doing well for themselves but they are not much. Students need to be creative in order to survive in this country

I think it's only in Nigeria that we still talk about degree. You are talking about the third class not given attention while H N D holders are not taking care of. Nigeria is a certificate country and that's why everyone wants to get degree certificate in all means. I think we should be looking at what individual has in brain. We should be looking at talent embedded in some one and not degree certificate because most of the degree certificate holder can not defend it. Some got it cunny way.

Your academic result does not dictate your fate... A good grade just gives you access to employers but its your skills that keeps you there. A creative, intelligent and innovative person would be more successful than those who just consider good grade. There's still hope for a Third Class Graduate even in a country like Nigeria.....

I personally think every student in the tertiary Instutution should put more effort in their studies regardless of  what they stand to gain with the certificate. Education empowers the mind and a well educated person is one that harness, not just the knowledge but also the experience gained from schooling.

I don't think the lack of counsellors and so on is the reason for a student bagging a third class. Some people are just very unserious. They miss exam sometimes and narrowly escape graduation. Third class is what my mummy call 'let my people go'. They should just leave school because extra year will only prolong their nuisance.

Being a third class student is not something worth appreciating but does not make a difference to first class student. Whether you are a first, second or third class student in dis country, I it not assured that a job will be waiting for you. A lot of graduates in this country are still roaming about seeking for jobs even despite being a first class student not to even talk of the third class.

We need to pray for this country and also help ourselves to find something resourceful to do that will bring money because it is not sure for students to see job in dis country even though passing through institution

It's totally discouraging I must say. The fact that someone came out with 3rd class doesn't make him/her a failure but here in Nigeria, discrimination is the order of the day. Even graduates with second class lower sometimes find it difficult to fit in. This has made our system of education poor and discouraging.

Someone with a third class degree is not different from someone that didn't attend school at all. But such people shouldn't be belittled, rather tertiary institutions should stop awarding that class. Asking the students who fall under that category to re-run is better than giving them a certificate that cannot be tendered anywhere

3rd class graduates or grades should not be a point of attraction to any employer or even the Nigerian state. They however, be placed equal with higher grades, but selective based of performance rate, commitment and demonstration of abilities. This is where most third class graduates has higher advantage over good grade graduates, as they go extra miles in improving what they have gotten already.

Reinforcement play a vital role in academic pursuit of students. If our leaders or school authorities can put reinforcement or any reasonable incentive to student's who worked hard in their academic performance and make sure that it is been implemented, trust me that students will no longer be unserious with their studies, or the rate of of third class would be reduce. Other factors could be applicable to students coming out with third class, some lecturers can be mean oo...

In this country you don't have to be worry about your qualification all you need to focus on is connection for job that's all

And if you observe, those ignored and less given attention are really worthful. They are the ones who turn out to be great and helpful to the society. But from the scratch the are not considered all because they didn't afford what is valued by a stereotype society. It's sad thou.

For example chief Gani Fawehinmi was a third class graduate and he was also one of the most decorated lawyer's in Nigeria before his death also Tony elumelu was a second class lower graduate but now he owns a bank and he is very successful so my advice to you is not to let your degree limit you.

Being a 3rd class certificate holder does not mean you can't be great all you need to do is to prove yourself that you are better than someone holding 1st class certificate. I can tell u that most people with first class bought. .  There are some people that are good with practical than theory. .

In giving job opportunities efficiency and dedication is what matters not our class of degrees.
