The closure of the borders was actually intended to strengthen the country's economy and also encourage the consumption of Nigerian made products but some factors ought to have been put in place before the closure; Firstly the products that is intended to be promoted needed to have met the standard quality of the imported goods for example rice. My mum complained the Nigerian made rice is not sweet and also it do not cook well and also there are stones in the rice; all those thing would have been through errors in production. The rice is even costly. No one would prefer a good that have fault to a well produced one.
Secondly the products ought to be available in excess. Imagine forcing people to buy things that are limited in quantity and quality it is not OK that way.
The closure of the borders have done a lot bad than good. Food is scarce because of high prices on goods, it have resulted in reduction of the in money circulation and so on
I think the Government should just reopen the borders and put what ia needed into consideration.
What do you think?
You are more than right, I wonder if they didn’t put this into consideration before taking their decision. The closure of the borders has really affected Nigerians badly, the government should reopen the borders and put things back in place or better still find a solution to this mess.
Closing the border is not the way forward in Nigeria, especially for the promotion of our own products. Like you said, the rice we produce is not in anyway close to quality. In Brazil, incentives are given for production. Anyone that produces get something from the givergover aside the profit they make from their farms. This has encouraged their farmers to work hard in meeting needs with quality products. Nigeria is not in anyway close that. It's so sad.
The closure of the border is not even doing what it is or was expected to do i the first place. The government should have thought about it some more. Cos even d home made products that they want us to consume is not meeting standard and it is been produced in a small quantities. How many farmers are equiped and empowered to plant enough to feed the nation.
Well, doing that now is the best thing he did because it will make us develop ourselves without having to depend on other countries... Its just that we aren't developed enough to achieve this.
As we stopped importing we expected the rice price to go down but its still expensive
There's no difference at all
And the rice is not even as good as the ones we import
If they wanna close the boarders then they should make sure that whatever we produce inside should be standard quality
Closing the borders won't solve anything cause there are still scarcity of some good foods which we get, and our farmers are not been properly equipped with good planting machines and finance for maximum food production.
Nigeria as a country is facing a lot if challenge because of the border closure, we need to start producing 70 to 80 percent of what we are closing the border for
Yes the government should reopen the border so that the price of some goods can come down not everyone have the privileged to buy it at high cost and if they are not opening the border the product should be in excess and cheap
My brother honestly I'm so tired of that man called buhari and his opposite lifestyle.they are more serious matters to treat and all he could do was to close down the border so Nigeria will die of hunger May God help us all
As according to my own view about boarder closure, I think the government is right to some extend, but first of all, government should have initiate things that would alternatively provide all the product that necessitated the closure so that to lessen the sufferings among the victims in the country.
This pragmatic effort is a welcome development. Closing the border will help strengthen our economy. It will give more room for industrialists to thrive under favourable conditions. However government have to put down palliative measures in order to cushion the effect of the stress people may face
When the border of any country is being closed, people will struggle at first and find it really difficult to make earns smith but with time we will all adjust to the system and play along. Let's just pray that the closure of border will yield the needed fruit in this country.
Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari say di reason for di partial closing of Nigeria border with Benin Republic na sake of di massive smuggling activities, especially of rice, wey dey happun for dia.
Buhari give di reason during im tok-tok with di President of Benin Republic, Patrice Talon, during di Seventh Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD7), wey dey happun for Yokohama, Japan on Wednesday.
President Buhari, wey express great concern ova di smuggling of rice, say e dey threaten wetin e administration done achieve with dia agricultural policies.
According to am, "Now wey our people for di rural areas dem dey go back to dia farms, and di kontri don save money wey dem for spend to dey import rice with di kontri scarce foreign reserves, we no fit allow smuggling of di product on large scale like dat to continue."
Nigeria say dem no close Seme border wit Benin
Tins Nigeria must fix to enjoy AfCFTA
The Nigerian President say di limited closure of di kontri western border na to allow Nigeria security forces develop strategy on how to fight di smuggling.
Presido Buhari wey dey respond to di concern wey President Talon raise ontop how im pipo dey suffer because of di closure say im don take note and e go consider make dem open am again in di nearest future.
Buhari add say im go soon call meeting with im colleagues dem from Benin and Niger Republics to decide correct policies to stop di kain smuggling wey dey happun for di border
You are right, I think that adaquade measure should having putting in place before closing the boarders, like making our rice up to market standard, providing enough rice for masses, a provision for stone free rice should be made, affordable buying price should have being provided before closing the boarders.
The president didn't do well at all his not supposed to closed down the border he knows very well that that is we're some people are eating from
Actually what Buhari did was good, Nigerians are not just patient enough . It's a small issue if u have complaints about the rice take it up with the government it's in small quantity and quality because is just the beginning. Do you Dangote products started with rich quality and surplus quantity. If wewe cannot be patient for ourselves let think of the future of Nigerian
In as much as we have to encourage our local producers to strive, we must also know that people's choice and trust in a particular product is based on quality and healthy practices engaged in producing most consumer goods and other goods.
We Nigeria as a country can't be able to provide the needs of 150million Nigerians without been stretched to limit and again some of these local brands are not giving quality services and that calls a lot into questioning on the decision of the government. We just hope our government reconsiders as the matter also depends on people's means of livelihood and survival.
This write up has shown clean and right facts that Nigerian Government don't think deeply before the Closure of Boarders. They do feel everyone will be fine or ok with their everytime boarder closure .
It's a pain for me that Nigeria with blessed resources still find it difficult to manage or control their resources. Our leaders(Government) has squandered everything we could have used to control ourselves in Nigeria and still they always claim it that Nigeria is getting better.
Even on Agricultural Sector that the Government are claiming that we should return to, are they giving every support for the progress of Agriculture in Nigeria. Capital "NO" because they only come to Power and earn thier own fucking interest.Closure of boarders everytime isn't the right thinking of our government in helping our Country for Good.
Closing the border is not wise. If there are certain things that have been put inplace like having our own working mills for rice and other food production closing the border won't affect Nigerians, so the president should allow all boarders function again so that businesses won't be in lose.
You are right, closing the border was a good strategy but it wasn't well planned. We need people who can see the future we'll not literally but at least be able to predict what will happen after an action has been taken out.
The government close Nigeria boder so that we can buy our product but let us ask ourselves can this Nigeria made products compete with the quality and standard of the imported goods '' No" I think the government should put alot of things in place before closing the boder
The broader was closed to improve the economy of the country. But he did not shake the table very well. If you wanna do a thing like this, then do it in a way that all citizens will be affected, including the senators and all those involved in overseeing the affairs of this country.
After closing the borders I think he’d have made available some more advanced agricultural facilities to improve better production of goods here in Nigeria so as to improve their quality and quantity. With time money circulation will be better and our economy would have made significant improvements.
The Nigerian government always try to jump the gun when trying to fix a problem. Before they close the border in order to make Nigeria self sufficient and reduce importation they should have place structures in place in order to promote and help manufacturets of that particular product first.
This is not the next thing in this situation of our country closing of border doesn’t add to corruption if we can say the truth because people are making money through this border and they were able to feed their family so I will beg the government to help the situation
I support the closure of the borders but in this situation there suppose to be pallative measures to back your closing of the borders like looking for a way to increasing production and not vat because you want to pay minimum wage when subsidizing food production is the key
You close border just to wicked the poor people. You dont want things to be imported into the country from another country, but you will still leave the country and go out side the country for treatment, abi that one no follow for border closure.
Opening the border is not the issue ! What we need is to improve on our production level and invest more on our local production let's say no to importation and embrace our own local production in all aspects and areas of production from energy to local food stuffs thank you
Yea its true closing boarder can solve the problem but just creating a better solution to the production of good product in Nigeria. My mom sells rice too and she complains a lot about the Nigeria rice that its cheaper but not okay.
To whoever put this article together, you are very observant and intelligent. All you have said is completely true. The closure of the borders have frankly done more harm than good.I just hope that what is necessary is put into consideration and adjustments are made.
I was very surprised when I heard about the closure of the border, but because I wanted to trust the government and I hoped that it would be for the best, but yesterday my roommate wanted to cook and she went to the market to get some ingredients, and the after story was so sad 😔. She kept complaining about how everything was beyond her budget. My customers that sells me first hand okirika clothes is also complaining, she doesn't have nice stuffs for sale again. This border issue is causing more harm than good and I hope the government can see how much it's citizens are suffering
I totally agree with you,the president should open the borders in other to reduce food scarcity in the country due to high cost of food. However, though the Nigerian rice hasn't met the standard of the imported rice,I can say that its better than before, there's no stone in it and when it comes to rising,it rises very well
To me closing the border is not a great idea what our president should have done is to regulate the import of goods. A caculate amount of goods should be approved for importation, by closing the border importers from other country would find it difficult for us to trade with them,, we also have important goods that are surpose to be exported but with the idea of our president all our export plan may just be void
Closing the boarder by the president is a good act but its just that some certain things were not put in place before implementing the action. For infant industry has not grown to the level to be able to meet the quantity needed even to their quality. And by this, it reflect to high price of their product. So to me in absence of this, the president should reopen the boarder.
You very right because right now a lot of people have been affected by this called closing of border, I my self also suffering for this, because I love to eat rice a lot, now that the only rice available is Nigeria rice its not sweet at all. That I have decided not to eat rice again for now. I think our president should just reconsider us.
In my opinion I think the border should remain closed coz when the citizens are not able to get the foreign rice they'll stick to the local which is actually very good to me and this will help improve our economy
Youre on point, people prefer to buy the imported ones at a higher rate than to buy these local ones cheaper. Adequate provisions should have been made before closing the borders, many people are used to those imported goods and are finding it hard to adapt to the local ones
Your points are very relevant, also I feel instead of closing the borders they should have just limited the quantity of goods coming in therefore making it circulate well with the locally produced goods, and it will reduce incessant rice of goods like rice
Seriously closing the boarders is not the main problem of Nigeria now, and besides before closing it the government should have ensured that all those neccessary machinaries use In producing those imported product are intact but non where provided. Seriously thy should re_open the boarder and allow the masses to eat good food, wear good cloth and so on
What is all this nonsense, Nigerians are always complaining, we all believed in him to do it so let him do it as he see fit eenh, and besides where are not the first country to close borderline, china 2007, America 1986,1998,2002, so what exactly is the big deal now.
Closing the border is not the next thing because is given all people problem because all food have cost now and he said the are caring inadequate thing enter the country I think will have security since they don't believe there self they know all of them is bad leader they know that if they put security there some will still betray
Well said and very true . The closure of the border has its good sides though but it has done a lot of bad also , and this is due to how we were forced to accept things which we were not used to at a very fast rate . Things should have been taken slowly and the goods of the country should have been improved , with the improvements of the goods we won't be forced to go back to them ,we would have gone willingly and then slowly the borders would have been closed and it won't cause a lot of damages . We would have been more Happier. For the examole of rice given ,eve today I had to be patient before I was abkable eat that rice because there was too many stones In the rice but that's how they expect us to keep on pretending like all is well and move on . I personally think the borders need to be opened for a while too ..
Actually closing the border is not a bad thing but what is need to be done not to have any affection on us supposed to be done before they attempt to close the border
You are very correct, I think the government should rather close the border for Tokunbo cars and generator to encourage the use of made in Nigeria vehicles and also improve the electricity epilepsy in the country.
I believe he should have made it something of a gradual process. He didn't give enough time for all to prepare, we have not planted enough crops for ourselves which brought about scarcity and the high price of foodstuffs. Vehicles importation could have been banned.
