What Buhari Should Have Done Instead Of Closing The Borders

The closure of the borders was actually intended to strengthen the country's economy and also encourage the consumption of Nigerian made products but some factors ought to have been put in place before the closure; Firstly the products that is intended to be promoted needed to have met the standard quality of the imported goods for example rice. My mum complained the Nigerian made rice is not sweet and also it do not cook well and also there are stones in the rice; all those thing would have been through errors in production. The rice is even costly. No one would prefer a good that have fault to a well produced one.

Secondly the products ought to be available in excess. Imagine forcing people to buy things that are limited in quantity and quality it is not OK that way.

The closure of the borders have done a lot bad than good. Food is scarce because of high prices on goods, it have resulted in reduction of the in money circulation and so on

I think the Government should just reopen the borders and put what ia needed into consideration.

What do you think?

  • You are more than right, I wonder if they didn’t put this into consideration before taking their decision. The closure of the borders has really affected Nigerians badly, the government should reopen the borders and put things back in place or better still find a solution to this mess.

  • Closing the border is not the way forward in Nigeria, especially for the promotion of our own products. Like you said, the rice we produce is not in anyway close to quality. In Brazil, incentives are given for production. Anyone that produces get something from the givergover aside the profit they make from their farms. This has encouraged their farmers to work hard in meeting needs with quality products. Nigeria is not in anyway close that. It's so sad.

  • The closure of the border is not even doing what it is or was expected to do i the first place. The government should have thought about it some more. Cos even d home made products that they want us to consume is not meeting standard and it is been produced in a small quantities. How many farmers are equiped and empowered to plant enough to feed the nation.

  • Well, doing that now is the best thing he did because it will make us develop ourselves without having to depend on other countries... Its just that we aren't developed enough to achieve this.

  • Yes ooo

As we stopped importing we expected the rice price to go down but its still expensive

    There's no difference at all

And the rice is not even as good as the ones we import

If they wanna close the boarders then they should make sure that whatever we produce inside should be standard quality

  • Closing the borders won't solve anything cause there are still scarcity of some good foods which we get, and our farmers are not been properly equipped with good planting machines and finance for maximum food production.

  • Yes the government should reopen the border so that the price of some goods can come down not everyone have the privileged to buy it at high cost and if they are not opening the border the product should be in excess and cheap

  • As according to my own view about  boarder closure, I think the government is right to some extend, but first of all, government should have initiate things that would alternatively provide all the product that necessitated the closure so that to lessen the sufferings among the victims in the country.

However government have to put down palliative measures in order to cushion the effect of the stress people may face

  • In as much as we have to encourage our local producers to strive, we must also know that people's choice and trust in a particular  product is based on quality and healthy practices engaged in producing most consumer goods and other goods.

We Nigeria as a country can't be able to provide the needs of 150million Nigerians without been stretched to limit and again some of these local brands are not giving quality services and that calls a lot into questioning on the decision of the government. We just hope our government reconsiders as the matter also depends on people's means of livelihood and survival.

  • This write up has shown clean and right facts that Nigerian Government don't think deeply before the Closure of Boarders. They do feel everyone will be fine or ok with their everytime boarder closure .

It's a pain for me that Nigeria with blessed resources still find it difficult to manage or control their resources. Our leaders(Government) has squandered everything we could have used to control ourselves in Nigeria and still they always claim it that Nigeria is getting better.

Even on Agricultural Sector that the Government are claiming that we should return to, are they giving every support for the progress of Agriculture in Nigeria. Capital "NO" because they only come to Power and earn thier own fucking interest.Closure of boarders everytime isn't the right thinking of our government in helping our Country for Good.

  • Closing the border is not wise. If there are certain things that have been put inplace like having our own working mills for rice and other food production closing the border won't affect Nigerians, so the president should allow all boarders function again so that businesses won't be in lose.

  • I totally agree with you. If the government wants to promote the consumption of home made products, then the best thing to do is to impose high tariff on imported goods. This will help chase foreign importers away. But closing borders is a total balderdash. He is just making life miserable for many people who are into importation business.

She kept complaining about how everything was beyond her budget. My customers that sells me first hand okirika clothes is also complaining, she doesn't have nice stuffs for sale again. This border issue is causing more harm than good and I hope the government can see how much it's citizens are suffering

However, though the Nigerian rice hasn't met the standard of the imported rice,I can say that its better than before, there's no stone in it and when it comes to rising,it rises very well

  • To me closing the border is not a great idea what our president should have done is to regulate the import of goods. A caculate amount of goods should be approved for importation, by closing the border importers from other country would find it difficult for us to trade with them,, we also have important goods that are surpose to be exported but with the idea of our president all our export plan may just be void

    - Usman Abdulmalik - 2019-10-01 09:51:53 Quote

  • Closing the boarder by the president is a good act but its just that some certain things were not put in place before implementing the action. For infant industry has not grown to the level to be able to meet the quantity needed even to their quality. And by this, it reflect to high price of their product. So to me in absence of this, the president should reopen the boarder.

  • Youre on point, people prefer to buy the imported ones at a higher rate than to buy these local ones cheaper. Adequate provisions should have been made before closing the borders, many people are used to those imported goods and are finding it hard to adapt to the local ones

  • Well said and very true . The closure of the border has its good sides though but it has done a lot of bad also , and this is due to how we were forced to accept things which we were not used to at a very fast rate . Things should have been taken slowly and the goods of the country should have been improved , with the improvements of the goods we won't be forced to go back to them ,we would have gone willingly and then slowly the borders would have been closed and it won't cause a lot of damages . We would have been more Happier. For the examole of rice given ,eve today I had to be patient before I was abkable eat that rice because there was too many stones In the rice but that's how they expect us to keep on pretending like all is well and move on . I personally think the borders need to be opened for a while too ..
