What Do You Think About Buhari's Decision On The Nigerian Borders?

For a while now almost every citizen in Nigeria is talking about the Closure of Nigerian borders by our President General Muhammadu buhari.

If we should take a look at the Economy of the Asian tigers in the likes of Hong Kong,Japan, etc.,we would see that this was the same approach they made while their economy was still strifing back then and when this approach was implemented by their government, it turned out to be successful and as at this present day, they are of the leading economies in the world.

Now, is this what our president is trying to achieve?. Since the closure of the borders, surviving has being hard for citizens who get their daily income from sales through the border thereby making most people who were hardworking turn to thief's by breaking into peoples shops, stores and houses. Our president closed the borders of our country and ordered us to go farming buy he didn't create another means from which the people who were gaining income from the borders and other unemployed youth will feed themselves and the family.

What do you have to say about this matter???

  • Seriously, this not how to do things, you want to shut the border and no option of what to use, seriously Buhari is not a leader at all, this not how a leader do, the Nigeria made rice is not up to standard,

  • My opinion on that is that what he did is so helping because here in Nigeria,we so much depend on imported goods and food products from other countries, even an ordinary pencil we cannot make here in Nigeria, even note books which are made with woods and timber...or don't we have enough tress in Nigeria to make enough and even export?.so my take on this is that let the border still be closed pending the time we think on how to improvise and make things work out in our own very Country.

  • The truth remains that before those Asian tigers were able to take such step, there were systems and industries already working. So, the policy only improved or should i say boosted them.

Now,in the case of Nigeria, there is no provision for facilities that have the capacity to satisfy the ever increasing needs of the masses.. Now that the border had been shutdown, life would become unbearably difficult and instead of improving the economy, its actually messing it up the more..

  • Well I'll say his idea is a good one but since he knew he wanted to shut our boards down he should have first created other means by which those who base their livelihood on trading will still be able to survive.  Before shutting the boarders he should have made sure that our famers are well equppied and will be able to produce enough to carter for the country.

  • The closure of the boarders  have is negative effects everything in Nigeria is being controlled anyhow, let the president visit the boader and see how people are submarge in suffering. At least now what we can't produce let it be imported

  • His motive is my concern actually, if he is planning to go through the method used by the Asian tigers, the I have no problem with it. All I'll just implore him to do is to create jobs for those whose means of livelihood was through the borders

  • The government will always say they will do this or do that, without thinking of consequences or providing alternative means to living by many people who depends on the opening of the boarder for their businesses to strive.

I just hope the government reconsiders its decisions and make it easier for both government and its people.

  • For any country that wishes to close its boarder, appropriate measures must be taken. Provisions has to be made before closing the boarder. I think people should have been informed ahead before the closure of the boarder so they would be prepared.

  • I think his only been indifferent about the situation of the people. It is true the Asian tigers adopted same measure to boost their economy but they also made provisions for people who were getting money from working across borders. But as you can see reverse is the case in Nigeria as no adequate preparation and provisions were made and is really telling on those who make a living out of their work in this borders.

Am disappointed in Mr president, he is not a good leader at all.

If only those things will be improved in quality and reduce to a price affordable by all..

Only then will it be a great idea..

God blessed Nigeria with everything but we are not making good use of it. So, this is just a phase, it will all pass. Let's try and appreciate what we have in Nigeria

I believe he should like give sign or a speech that around so so time in the future that the boarder will be closed so that those making a living from it can plan a new way out.

Or had it been he closed it and opened or creat another employment opportunities for those it has affected, then no body would have reacted.

  • Buhari's decision on the Nigerian borders is a very good one for the country based on the security challenges the country is facing. Now we hear less of the boko haram bombing the North because the is no way they could smuggle weapon into the country and then the Nigerian army can capture them. So it a good decision.

I know his intentions are good, he is trying to reduce importation and help our local industries but it shouldn't be done overnight

  • I think it’s actually a good approach judging from the fact that he studied the approach those other very economical countries took and wants to try their method; we can only hope and pray that the result turns out positive.

But I feel it’d have been better if he informed business owners like a month before time so they’d have prepared financially on how they’d survive as their source of income is being closed.

  • Nigeria says it has closed the border with Benin to prevent smuggling, but behind the move lies a history of political godfathering and economic malice.

There are many reasons why the Nigerian president has been so firm. Having launched into a protectionist programme, Buhari says his counterpart is not doing enough to stop the large-scale smuggling – especially of rice, which Nigeria also produces – between the two countries. But Buhari was also under pressure from the business community.

“A number of Nigerian business leaders have been complaining about Cotonou’s attitude. They claim their trucks going to Benin are overtaxed at the border,” says a Beninese businessman with links in Nigeria. “In addition, businessman Aliko Dangote, who bought the Nigerian government’s shares in the Lafarge group, wants to sell his cement in Benin, which Talon is prohibiting.”

“Our cement factories are already at over-capacity, and we are doing a lot to fight smuggling,” retorts one of Talon’s government colleagues. “How can a member of the ECOWAS group, which is governed by free movement, decide overnight and without consultation to close its border with its neighbour? It’s not acceptable!”

“Nigeria has always considered Benin as a country of fraudsters and nothing more. This created a feeling of omnipotence in Abuja,” says a member of Talon’s inner circle. “We want to change all that and have an equal relationship. There has to be mutual respect.”

  • The closure of the bother is a very  wrong decision for Mr president to have decide on, the closure is really affecting the market and people are really starving and struggling to feed themselves, this has led to so many crimes, like robbery, hijacking people at corners, pick pocket, breaking shoes and  warehouse just to get food to eat.

  • The decision our President made by closing the border is not a good decision because a lot of people will suffer as the price of everything that’s being imported before will be of high rate. And I think he did that because he doesn’t know or care about how poor people will live with it just because he is rich and the price of things won’t be a problem for him and his family.

  • To the ordinary man this has not really helped in anyway.  there are other better solutions to the reviving of the nation economy than our borders closing ....It only inflate the prices of what we have here already and never helped in even curbing the corruption too because the politicians still imports in more of goods and services to their firms.

  • I don't think it's a good decision to shut down the border because it will just make things go worse thinking we are doing our self good. Price of goods available will tend to go higher since it can't be gotten anywhere. There by creating inflation in the society
