You Can Succeed Without A Record Label: DON JAZZY

Mavin’s record label founded and owned by Don Jazzy himself it’s said to be occupied and full so there is no vacant position left for new artiste to be signed yet.

A fan reached out to the Mavins manager Don Jazzy for help telling him to sign him into his record label and he also went ahead saying he won’t be collecting any percentage from the contracts if he is signed into the label.

Don jazzy replied him saying he doesn’t have vacancies in his record label presently and he shouldn’t send messages to other record labels in this manner that record labels would take advantage of him and finally said he doesn’t need a record label to be successful in the industry.

Can you really be successful in Nigeria without a record label as an upcoming artiste? Let me know in the comments section.

  • Well I don't think that it will be very easy to sell off songs and make it that big in music industry without labels. It will be difficult for an upcoming artists. But easier for popular ones in the country.

  • The truth is that he's saying that, so that the upcoming guy will not disturb him, why did a recent musician comnid suicide? Is it not because he couldn't make it big in the industry? Don't forget that he's signed to a record label, yet he couldn't make it now compare that to someone who has no sponsor, no connection or something to support him, how can he succeed alone in the industry? Tell me two musicians who made it in the industry without sponsorship?

  • He replied maturely and even see how he helped a lot of people too who may be having the same kinda mentality like he has... A record label isn't a guarantee for success....  Thanks Don Jazzy...

  • Sure you can be successful in Nigeria without a record label if you have a good promoter and you can produce good music. Working hard and praying daily is the key to success

  • This don jazzy is a legend. Even if there is a chance for him to sign new artists. He wouldn't sign that guy. The guy has presented himself cheap and irrelevant.  He just want to be signed up without believing himself.

  • Don Jazzy sure do have a point there, you can become whatever you want to be with the help of social media. Do stuffs and post online, if you're good enough, clients will come knocking on your door for negotiations and signature. How did the likes of Broda Shaggy, josh2funny and Ikorodu boys became popular? The future is in our hands, we just don't know how to use it.

  • As an upcoming artiste, you can be successful without a record label. The fact is that record label help to make a new artist reach peak in the music fast. But not wit standing,if u are mean in what you are out for, you will still make it. Atleast you start from radio advert and talk show until people become aware of your talent

  • Well to what the Don has said,  I think based on experience and how the Nigerian society to some extent is,  one could easily be taken advantage of on the disguise of assistance. Also the guy I think should first create a content for himself. Record some videos with his phones post them on Twitter or do a facebook video post it. If he has good content people will follow him and will even advice a producer to take a look.. I wish him the best. But the Don is *Right! *

  • It is a really good advice he is giving, don jazzy is not respected for nothing,he earned all he is getting, instead of looking for a record label focus on making good work and the labels will come for you

  • I think the guy is very desperate on becoming a star in the music industry but like the man said he shouldn't go around saying stuff like that they would really take advantage of him and probably he's a very talented guy they would use him and make the record label a big one and for this big guy to say this it means that they are people who have made it without a record label

  • Do I blame the poor boy, he just wants his hustle to pay nooni. The music industry is so tedious that it's not for the faint-hearted. Those that are in are still trying to fit in properly and belong. How much more newbies or the unknown ones..

  • I don't think its actually possible to succeed without a record label.I mean,in terms of capital and all other factors..

I mean one will gladly choose to listen to a song from am artiste in a particular record label over the artiste without a record label

  • I love don jazzy, he told the guy the truth, you don't send such messages to record labels.

Believe me, in Nigeria today, it will be very hard for an upcoming artist without a record label deal, but still, don't forget lyta has no record label before he met Olamide, small doctor too, zeenolesky and lil frosh, no record label when they started but those people work hard, they eventually get the fame, so put in a lot of work, you will get there one day, it's just a matter of time.

  • Record label or not, what I believe these upcoming artistes need is a platform to show what they’ve got to offer and the stars could give them that. Trust me that guy that said he won’t be collecting any percentage of the contracts is just saying that so that he can get that chance and when he’s blown, that’s when you’ll see people like that badmouthing the record labels that they are bad and the artiste will then get public sympathy.

  • Yes, this true. But people don't reason the way I do. Thanks to don jazzy for this perfect advice.

I always advice friends in the entertainment industry to move on with the career and not rely on a record label especially when the record label is not helping matters. Get out of the box

    And use him for nothing

Buh that's the right thing Jazzy told him, bro keep putting to work, and wait for your time

  • That was an honest response from Don Jazzy. If you're good at what you do, your talent will simply sell you. A man's gift maketh way for him and bringeth him before great me

  • The guy shouldn't have made the statement of not collecting any percentage from him moreover the reply Don Jazzy gave him was cool enough tho but he was supposed to in a way assist him because in music industry if Everyone starts signing up coming artist i think the music industry will be of little or no value

  • Actually this is possible with a lot of patience and consistency, your producer could market for you but that's also a form or record label because there is no way you won't have a producer but good record label boosts and fasten the race as a good singer

  • It is possible actually, but it will be very difficult. The business of music is an expensive one in as much as it is a very profitable business. You pay to book sessions in the studio that's if you are lucky and financially okay. Don Jazzy should check him out.

  • We must understand that this is Nigeria, it is a vain motivation by saying an upcoming artist can make it without record label. I'm not saying it's  not possible to make it without record label, but the probability are too slim, I can say that very few people has actually made it without record label in Nigeria.

  • This is what majority of these young and upcoming artists don’t understand. If you are good enough and marketable, you really dont need to beg record label boss to sign you, rather they will be the one begging you to sign you.

  • thumbs up to don jazzy for letting most of the upcoming artist In the game no that not all that glitters is gold, especially in the music industry where most of this top record labels get the best deals from taleneted musicians all in the name of leading them to stardom which at the end turn out not to end well

    - Ogbu Samuel - 2019-10-11 18:36:15 Quote

  • Well, it not as easy as it sound, surving without record level can be sometimes stressful and to cut it short, you might not even have the passion for music anymore, so depending on luck and grace, it not guaranty, except for God grace.

  • I think don Jazzy was actually proving a point with what he said to this upcoming artist. I think that upcoming artists needs to put in a lot of effort into their music and get attentions from different record labels. Rema actually didn't send any appeal message to Don Jazzy before he got signed into Mavins neither did Crayon. They both played a vital role in winning the challenge that was set out be D'Prince, a member and also a brother to Don Jazzy. When they came out winners to the freestyle challenge Gucci Gang released by D'Prince. I feel of other artist can too wait for opportunity like this and take it, it wouldn't turn out to be a problem for them. But what this upcoming artist said to me was irrelevant and alot of artists would have used his talents for their own interest. Lets not go into Olamide's issue with Lyta because most of us already know what happened and how it turned out.

  • Why You Don't Need a Record Label. ... For example, the average major label contract sees artists receiving 15% of earnings from a release. It's a dinosaur business model based on physical production costs. The relationship between the record label and the artist is changing.
