Rouvy Wants Cyclists To Map The World With Their Rides

Virtual cycling platform Rouvy has announced a big raft of updates, including the public availability of its Route Creator tool.

This lets subscribers create their own routes to use within Rouvy, and conceptually it’s not miles removed from a level creator for a video game.

It starts off with a POV-style video of the route, which you might capture with an action camera like a GoPro. Rouvy’s Route Creator can then convert the 2D video into a 3D course.

The user can determine where the track is in the footage, and insert rendered 3D elements like crowds, trackside barriers and — according to Rouvy’s demo video — helicopters.

It requires a GPS-enabled camera, in order to calculate route data without making the end user do all the work themselves. GoPro Hero 12 Black owners now have another reason to be annoyed this generation excised GPS.

This isn’t just a simple click-and-go process, though, as you can also customize the height profile to properly recreate the real-life ride. That’s going to be crucial to make the routes feel realistic on a smart turbo trainer.

Rouvy’s Route Creator Plan

“Whether it’s your favourite local loop you want to recreate indoors, or a route worthy of the world being able to experience, Rouvy Route Creator puts the user at the centre of the ride planning and route creation,” says Rouvy.

Rouvy’s Route Creator tool was tested among a small group of users at the end of 2024, and has now entered an open beta phase.

“Whilst not changing the core use function of Rouvy, this unique tool will allow riders all around the world to make their Rouvy experience even more unique and personal, whilst opening up the global map of user-generated routes for all our users, without compromising on quality,” says Marek-Martin Matyska, Rouvy Product Director.

The platform now features a world map interface that lets subscribers find those routes spread across the world. At this current stage of Route Creator’s roll-out, your routes won’t suddenly be shared with the rest of the world, though. They’ll remain private initially, and can be shared with a link.

Route Creator arrives alongside a bunch of interface changes, which Rouvy has detailed in a YouTube video:

A Rouvy subscription costs $14.99 a month, and a free 7-day trial is available for new users.
