I just finished binge watching Boots, a show that was not what I expected, a unique look at brotherhood in the Marines but also highlighting its flaws. The lead, Cameron Cope, based on a real soldier as chronicled in the book The Pink Marine, is gay, but that’s only one piece of the puzzle as the spotlight shines across the entire cast. It’s a great show, it’s done well, so, is Boots season 2 coming?
There are some updates on that front, and so far, things are looking pretty positive despite no official word from Amazon:
- Reportedly, several members of the cast of Boots had their options extended for the show, which is being done to secure them for a potential season 2 of the series. It’s a move that expresses confidence in potential longer-term plans.
- The cast itself is 100% on board for more. Here’s star Miles Heizer, who plays Cope: I would do literally anything for Season 2,” Miles Heizer said. “So, yeah, I’m hoping. I’m glad it ends on a little bit of a cliffhanger…Simultaneously, it’s a very powerful ending to see this beautiful camaraderie and then this harsh reality of what they actually signed up for hits them. I think that would be very interesting to explore in Season 2, especially for Cameron, who really was just running away from his family and wanted to be with his best friend. Suddenly realizing this is a very serious decision.” We’ve seen similar sentiments from other actors like Kieron Moore, who plays Slovacek, who believes there’s more to explore with his character.
- The show was structured to end on a cliffhanger, changing somewhat dramatically from the book to do so. Greg Cope White’s book about his life was set in boot camp in 1979, but in the show, it’s 1990, right as the US is beginning to send in troops to the Gulf for the pending war. The season 2 concept, clearly, would be the Marines actually heading to battle for the first time.
- The Pentagon, when asked about the LGBTQ show, issued a statement not naming it, but lambasting Netflix’s woke agenda, which the showrunner credits for elevating viewership of the series after that happened.
Then there’s the “Netflix” of it all, and Boots seems like it ticks all the boxes. Good critic and audience scores, solid performance on the Netflix top 10 list, a relatively cheap production with location filming, and a relatively unknown cast. Season 2 taking place in an actual war would up the costs, no doubt, but with the press Boots has gotten, and the fact that it was never pitched as a limited series in the first place, I would be optimistic about season 2 being announced at some point.
