The Ugly Stepsister
The Ugly Stepsister
Halloween is nearly upon us, meaning two more weeks to cram in all the horror movies you’ve missed in 2025. I’ve written a few of these lists, but I know some people don’t trust movie critics, and it’s generally true that they tend to score horror movies higher than fans. Fans are harder to please in this genre, so I figured I’d do a breakdown of the most well-liked horror films of 2025 by audiences per their Rotten Tomatoes scores, and some of them did come out higher than critics, in a few instances.
Here are the top ones, and I have seen 9/12. Still working on the last three. Here they are.
Sinners – 96% – This is more than just your average vampire movie, and both audiences and critics have given this sky-high scores as it heads toward a slew of Oscar nominations.
Companion – 89% – I think this may actually be my favorite horror film of the year, starring Yellowjackets’ Sophie Thatcher as an android girlfriend, the actress also having led one of 2024’s best horror films, Heretic.
The Ugly Stepsister
The Ugly Stepsister
The Ugly Stepsister – 87% – This is one I haven’t seen yet, but given that it’s in third place, I’m going to check out a “twisted take” on the classic story of Cinderella.
Final Destination Bloodlines
WB
Final Destination: Bloodlines – 86% – Obviously this franchise has gone up, down and all over the place in terms of quality over the years, but this is the best since the original with an unforgettable opening scene.
Weapons – 85% – One of the most-hyped horror movies of the year, you will want to see why all these kids sprint out of their houses one fateful night.
The Long Walk
The Long Walk
The Long Walk – 85% – I suppose classifying this as a horror movie is debatable, but it’s a horrifying concept, and the source material is written by Stephen King, so I’m going to count it. Amazing performances from stars Cooper Hoffman and soon-to-be-A-lister David Jonsson.
Black Phone 2
Black Phone 2
Black Phone 2 – 84% – It just came out in theaters, and while critics are mixed, audiences are loving the sequel to the original, a quasi-Nightmare on Elm Street revival this time around.
Good Boy – 82% – A horror movie from the perspective of a dog? The director’s dog? I mean, if that concept doesn’t hook you to begin with, I don’t know what to say.
Bring Her Back – 79% – It’s not Talk to Me, from the same directors, but this unsettling second possession outing is still a good one.
Drop – 79% – A woman is stalked on a date by someone airdropping her threats, and it’s better than it sounds. Starring The White Lotus’ Meghann Fahy and potential future Batman Brandon Sklenar.
The Conjuring: Last Rites
The Conjuring: Last Rites
The Conjuring: Last Rites – 78% – Critics were not on board with this “final” Conjuring entry (I will believe that when I see it), but audiences appreciated it a lot more.
Together – 76% – The “body horror” entry on this list, taking the spot of The Substance this year. It’s not winning any Oscars, but it’s a wild, gross ride.
Heart Eyes – 76% – Skip The Strangers this year and watch Heart Eyes, a much better slasher flick chronicling a killer murdering young lovers.
I’ve missed Ugly Stepsister, Good Boy and The Conjuring so far, but I will hopefully get all those in by the end of the month. Which ones have you caught already, and which do you still want to see?
