Wondering what a piece of bread atop a yellow square atop an offering at a summer cookout might be? Not sure what it means to “envelop and obscure?” Don’t worry, because I’m here to help you with extra hints and the answers for today’s NYT Mini crossword.

The NYT Mini is a quick and dirty version of the newspaper’s larger and long-running crossword. Most days, there are between three and five clues in each direction on a five by five grid, but the puzzles are sometimes larger, especially on Saturdays.

Unlike its larger sibling, the NYT Mini crossword is free to play on the New York Times website or NYT Games app. However, you’ll need an NYT Games subscription to access previous puzzles in the archives.

It took me 1:09 to complete today’s NYT Mini.

As a rule, I generally don’t like self-referential crossword clues that require you to fill in a different answer first. But at least it made sense here in terms of the shape of a BURGER, with CHEESE and then a BUN on top. Still, in part because I mentally block out those kinds of clues until I cycle back around to them, this one took me a little while.

I got BURGER then thought SHROUD might be “wrap up,” but I was off the mark there. I was glad to have figured out TPS (or “toilet papers”), especially because that wasn’t a thing where I grew up.

BEGOT and USE UP were answers I ended up getting by default, but I did figure out NERDS. The trio of three-letter Down answers were no trouble, and those helped me deduce BUN and CHEESE.

That brings my current stint of NYT Mini hints coverage to an end. Catch you in two weeks!
