If you’re enjoying Wordle, and possible Connections and Strands and the Spelling Bee and so forth, but you’re curious about trying something just a tiny bit different, consider Pips. Pips is the newest game from the New York Times, and I’ve started writing a daily Pips guide as well, adding it to my rotation of various puzzle guides, from the Mini to Wordle.

I wrote about the new puzzle right here. I think maybe I need to just come up with my own puzzle game next. Move from guide-writer to puzzle-creator. Perhaps. Someday.

In any case, we have a Wordle to solve! Let’s solve it!

How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

  • Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
  • Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
  • Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.

Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Today’s Wordle Hints And Answer

Wordle Bot’s Starting Word: SLATE

My Starting Word Today: GRATE (112 words remaining)

The Hint: What’s yours is mine.

The Clue: This Wordle begins with a vowel.

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.

GRATE was an okay, not great but not terrible, opening guess. 112 words remained, but at least I had two yellow vowels. I flipped those around and tried ALIEN (because I’ve been watching and writing about Alien: Earth on Hulu). This left me with just two potential solutions: APNEA and ANNEX. I was 99.99% sure we’d had APNEA before so I went with ANNEX. My incredible memory (I wish!) saved the day! ANNEX for the win!

Competitive Wordle Score

Another tie, so no points there and the Bot and I each get 1 point for guessing in three. As we race toward September, our August scores are neck-and-neck:

Erik: 14 points

Wordle Bot: 15 points

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word annex comes from Latin annexare (“to bind to, join to”), from ad- (“to, toward”) + nectere (“to tie, bind”). It entered English via Middle French annexer in the late Middle Ages. The core sense is “to attach, join, or add,” which later developed into the political and territorial meaning of incorporating land or property into something larger.
