Did you know there are tons of people still making games for platforms like the Sega Genesis, NES, and Game Boy? Gumball in Trick-or-Treat Land from publisher Mega Cat Studios and developer Exquisite Laundry Pet is the latest upcoming Game Boy Color game I’ve seen worth keeping an eye on. It’s also coming to PC via Steam as well.

This 8-bit adventure RPG is heavily inspired by the likes of Undertale and Earthbound with it’s quirky world full of interesting characters. Players will meet colorful companions, brew potions, solve puzzles, and face a menagerie of menacing munchies and temperamental treats in strategic, turn-based battles.

Gumball in Trick-or-Treat Land—Coming Soon to Game Boy Color

“I’m thrilled about the opportunity to work with Mega Cat Studios to bring Gumball in Trick-or-Treat Land to Steam and to the Game Boy Color,” developer Adam Lewis Graf said in a press release. “Since this project is a love letter to the late 90s era of handheld games, it’s a very special thing to see it get the chance to reach a wider audience in the modern day. I hope that those with nostalgia for that Game Boy Color era feel that this game scratches a similar itch, and I also hope to provide younger players with a new opportunity to engage with the vibes, music, and visual language of the era, which I think hold a unique sort of comfort.”

According to the game’s detail page, this is what it’s all about:

Getting home shouldn’t be this hard, but for a gumball who’s just crash-landed in Trick-or-Treat Land, you take what you can get. A local Scarecrow can send you back, but his magic is busted. What starts as a simple errand for a spellbook becomes a huge quest to find 7 Hallowed Patches.

To find them, you’ll have to deal with everyone from cranky vegetables to ghoulish mob bosses. Luckily, you won’t be alone. You’ll convince a few local misfits to join your party and help even the odds on a journey across a land of spooky, sugary weirdos.

Can you gather the patches and find your way back to the gumball machine?

Personally, I’m a big fan of seeing indies continue to make and release new games for old hardware. Not only is it just heartwarming to see a familiar art style that I grew up with, but it’s frankly good for the industry to see iteration and evolution of old hardware that’s able to hone in on fun factor and great design over flashy visuals and gimmicks.

Gumball in Trick-or-Treat Land is slated for release digitally on PC via Steam and physically on an actual Game Boy Color cartridge next year.
